The game's eponymous protagonist is Shadow the Hedgehog , an invention by Dr. Eggman's grandfather Gerald Robotnik, who gradually learns more and more about his past as the game progresses while suffering from amnesia . Depending on the player's decision, Shadow joins either the benign or the evil characters as the game progresses. The plot deepens the story from Sonic Adventure 2 .

The game is the sequel to Sonic Heroes (2003) and the predecessor of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).

action

Shadow the Hedgehog, the dark counterpart to Sonic the Hedgehog and creation by Professor Gerald Robotnik over 50 years ago, is still suffering from amnesia after the events of Sonic Heroes three months ago and is only slowly and gradually remembering its past. After countless Shadow androids were recently discovered, he fears that he is even a copy. Suddenly a creature called Black Doom appears, whose army attacks the people and thus starts a war. Black Doom, who seems to know a surprising amount about Shadow, promises to reveal the whole truth about his past if he joins Black Doom and hands him the seven Chaos Emeralds.

The war between humans and Black Doom's army has created chaos worldwide. Also Sonic and his friends Tails , Knuckles and Amy as well as Dr. Eggman , Rouge, E-123 Omega, Espio, Charmy, Vector and the President interfere in this conflict and depending on the player's decision, Shadow either sided with Sonic, Dr. Eggman, Black Doom or the President and learns more and more about his past. Depending on his decisions, Shadow is either on one side or the other in the battle between Sonic and Dr. Eggman or is for the destruction of humanity or for the destruction of Black Doom. The GUN Commander of the human army turns out to be Maria Robotnik's childhood friend and blames Shadow for the terrible events on the ARK space station over 50 years ago and Maria's death.

After Shadow has lived through all the story lines, it comes to the finale in which Black Doom uses the seven Chaos Emeralds to land his home, the Black Comet, on earth. In doing so, he releases a neurotoxin that completely paralyzes Sonic and the others. It turns out that Professor Gerald Robotnik once created the Eclipse Cannon to destroy the Black Comet and that Shadow was created with the blood of Black Doom to stop it. In the final battle, Shadow transforms into Super Shadow and Black Doom into Doom Devil. During the fight, Dr. Eggman that he had Shadow rescued and hidden by a robot after his final, world-saving Chaos Control at the end of Sonic Adventure 2 , which confirms that it was the only real Shadow all along and not one of the many Shadow androids from Sonic Heroes . Super Shadow defeats Doom Devil, brings the Black Comet back into space with Chaos Control and the Eclipse Cannon of the ARK space station destroys the Black Comet once and for all, as Professor Gerald Robotnik had planned. After regaining his full memory, Shadow decides to leave his past behind.

Gameplay

The board of levels in Shadow the Hedgehog

In Shadow the Hedgehog , the player takes control of the dark hedgehog Shadow in a three-dimensional platform adventure. Shadow have the Spin Attack when jumping , with which many opponents can be defeated by touch. With the jump button in the air, the homing attack can be carried out, with which Shadow steers directly towards opponents in the immediate vicinity. When touched, the golden rings can be collected; If Shadow takes damage, he loses the rings. If Shadow takes damage without owning rings or falls into a deadly abyss, he loses an extra life, of which you have three at the start of the game. Similar to the Team Blast attacks in Sonic Heroes , Shadow has the Chaos Control and Chaos Blast skills , which he can use against opponents within the level. The item boxes can contain an extra life, the number of rings displayed, a protective shield, a magnetic protective shield, a heat-resistant protective shield, temporary invulnerability or healing. Checkpoints in the form of lanterns mark the reset point in the event of a loss of life.

Unique to the game is the use of detectable firearms that can be used at the push of a button. In the various levels you also briefly take control of other characters such as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Espio or Vector with their individual skills in certain sections. The goal of a level is often set differently and is rarely defined by reaching the end of the level. In the first level Westopolis, for example, Shadow has to defeat either all human soldiers or all warriors from Black Doom's army.

Levels can be completed with either the Hero , Dark or Neutral mission. The further course of the game, level and action result from the decisions in the levels. After each completed level, the board is displayed, which reveals whether it turns towards the benign or the malicious or remains neutral. A story line ends after six levels, but ten different endings are possible. The final story is only revealed after all ten endings have been completed. The game consists of 23 levels ( Westopolis , Lethal Highway , Glyphic Canyon , Digital Circuit , Circus Park , Prison Island , Cryptic Castle , Death Ruins , Mad Matrix , Sky Troops , The Doom , Central City , Lost Impact , Space Gadget , Iron Jungle , Air Fleet , The ARK , Final Haunt , Cosmic Fall , Lava Shelter , Black Comet , GUN Fortress and The Last Way ), all but the last of which are shown in one of the boxes on the board and can be reached accordingly.

synchronization

While the Japanese voices were largely retained compared to their predecessors, all characters in the English-speaking area were re - cast by using the voice actors of the Sonic-X anime series with immediate effect. One of the reasons for this decision, which was initially received critically by some fans, was the death of the previous Dr. Eggman spokesman Deem Bristow, who was henceforth dubbed by Mike Pollock.

On the Japanese and North American PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions of the game, it was possible to switch between Japanese or English speech. Switching is not possible in the European and GameCube versions of the game.

development

According to Yūji Naka, a survey of Sonic gamers about what they would like to see in upcoming Sonic games revealed that several respondents said they would like to see firearms in the game. When thinking about it, it became clear that such weapons would not suit Sonic, but would suit the currently very popular character Shadow the Hedgehog. Yūji Naka and Takashi Iizuka began developing a deliberately darker game with Shadow in the lead role, the history of which is to be completely told to the end and which should also have optional firearms. Occasional expletives were also initially included in the game, but in consultation with the Entertainment Software Rating Board , which would have only allowed significantly older players to approve the game, the game was increasingly shortened and cut until it reached "E10 +" approval for players 10 years and older has been.

The game Shadow the Hedgehog was first introduced on March 8, 2005 when Sonic received his star on the Walk of Game and appeared about eight months later. The CGI cutscenes were created by Blur Studio , the music was once again made by Jun Senoue's band Crush 40 , who also provided the title track "I Am ... All of Me" and the final boss soundtrack "All Hail Shadow".
