Shimizu ( Japanese 清水 市 , - shi ) was a Japanese city ​​in Shizuoka Prefecture .

history

Before the establishment of the Ritsuryō system, this was the headquarters of the Iohara no kuni no miyatsuko ( 盧 原 国 ). The name also forms the origin of the name of Ihara-gun ( 庵 原 郡 ).

During the Edo period , the post office Ejiri ( 江 尻 宿 , Ejiri-juku ) of the Tōkaidō was in Shimizu .

On October 1, 1889, the Chō Shimizu ( 清水 町 , chō ) was set up in the Udo-gun . On April 1, 1896, the Udo-gun goes into the Abe-gun . On February 11, 1924, the Chō Shimizu, Ire ( 入 江 町 , -chō ), as well as the Mura Fujimi ( 不二 見 村 , -mura ) and Miho ( 三 保 村 , -mura ) merged in the Abe-gun to form Shi Shizuoka.

On July 16, 1945, an air raid took place that severely affected the city and the port.

On February 11, 1954, the Mura Iida ( 飯 田村 , mura ) was incorporated from the Ihara-gun. On April 1, 1995, the Mura Udo ( 有 度 村 , -mura ) was incorporated from the Abe-gun. The Abe-gun was then disbanded. On April 1, 1958, the districts of Nakayoshida ( 中 吉田 ), Hirazawa ( 平 沢 ) and Yada ( 谷 田 ) of the old Udo, as well as the district of Nakanogō ( 中 之 郷 ), and are incorporated into Shizuoka . On June 29, 1961, the Chō Okitsu ( 興 津 町 , -chō ), Sodeshi ( 袖 師 町 , -chō ), and the Mura Ihara ( 庵 原 村 , -mura ), Ojima ( 小島 村 , -mura ) and Ryūgouchi ( 両河内 村 , -mura ) incorporated from the Ihara-gun. On January 1, 1993, the districts of Nakanogō, Yada and Kusanagi ( 草 薙 ) are incorporated.

On April 1, 2001 Shimizu was named a major city with special status ( 特例 市 , tokureishi ).

On April 1, 2003, Shimizu and Shizuoka merged to form the new Shizuoka. On April 1, 2005, Shizuoka was named a "city by government decree" ( seirei shitei toshi ) and the municipality ( ku ) Shimizu-ku ( 清水 区 ) was established.
