Shiroishi-ku ( Japanese. 白石 区 ) is one of ten districts ( ku ) of Sapporo , the capital of the Japanese prefecture of Hokkaidō . It is 34.47 km² and is located east of the city center. In the north it borders on Kita-ku , in the northeast on the city of Ebetsu , in the east on Atsubetsu-ku , in the southeast on Kiyota-ku , in the south on Toyohira-ku and in the west on Chūō-ku .

The municipality extends over a plain between the rivers Toyohira and Atsubetsu, which form the western and eastern district borders. There are no significant elevations or other topographical features.

history

The name of the district is reminiscent of Shiroishi Castle , which is located in the city ​​of the same name in Miyagi Prefecture . The samurai Katakura Kuninori, the head of the resident Katakura family, had fought on the side of the Tokugawa in the Boshin War. Two years after their defeat, he emigrated to Hokkaidō, settled here with companions in 1871 and founded the village of Shiroishi. Some of the settlers moved a few kilometers further and founded a second village called Shin-Shiroishi in 1874. Both villages merged in 1902 to form Shiroishi municipality.

In 1889 the main road between Sapporo and Ebetsu was opened, in 1890 the bridge over the Toyohira . In 1903, Shiroishi Station was opened on the Hakodate Main Line . This station, in turn, was the starting point of the Jōzankei railway line from 1918 , and the Chitose line to Tomakomai was added in 1926 . Due to the good accessibility, the population of Shiroishi increased rapidly. On July 25, 1950, the community merged with the neighboring city of Sapporo. On April 1, 1972, the Shiroishi-ku district was established by government resolution. Seven years after the closure of the Jōzankei railway line, the district was connected to the subway network in 1976.

On November 6, 1989, the government created the new Atsubetsu-ku district from the district east of the Atsubetsu River . In 2003 the Sapporo Convention Center was built on the site of the former Higashisapporo train station .

traffic

National Road 12 from Sapporo to Asahikawa runs through Shiroishi-ku in a west-east direction . The Hokkaidō Highway to Muroran and Nayoro also runs through the district . Shiroishi-ku is also the eastern end point of the Sasson highway to Otaru .

In this district, the Shiroishi stations are on the Hakodate main line to Asahikawa and Heiwa on the branching Chitose line to Chitose and Tomakomai . In the very south of the district, the Tōzai line of the Sapporo subway runs with the stations Kikusui, Higashi-Sapporo, Shiroishi, Nangō-nana-chōme, Nangō-jūsan-chōme and Nangō-jūhatchōme.
