The surrounding towns are Karlsfeld in the southeast, Proschim in the south and Welzow in the northwest. history

Backyard in Siberia

The housing estate, consisting of two multi-family houses and two other buildings, was built around the beginning of the 20th century in order to create living space for the workers of the surrounding coal mines and briquette factories after the start of lignite mining in Lusatia . The place name probably goes back to a joke designation used by the residents of the neighboring town of Welzow, as the village was quite far from the Welzow city center.

In the 1930s the population in Siberia rose again, at that time about 20 families lived in the village. During the GDR era, young families in particular moved to the village; almost all families at that time still cultivated a garden and kept farm animals. Siberia had a kindergarten , which at times up to 25 children attended.

After the reunification in the GDR there was a change in Siberia. Young people in particular left the place because of their work and moved to Senftenberg, Spremberg or Berlin . At the beginning of the 1990s, the town still had around 150 inhabitants, but this number fell to 15 in 2013.

On July 25, 1952, Siberia was assigned as part of Welzows to the newly formed Spremberg district in the Cottbus district . After the reunification, Siberia was initially in the Spremberg district in Brandenburg , where it joined the Welzow office on September 10, 1992 . After the district reform in December 1993, Siberia came to the Spree-Neisse district . In October 2003 the office of Welzow was dissolved and the city and its districts were free.

present

The village of Siberia is earmarked for devastation in the mining plan in the course of the opening of subfield II of the Welzow-Süd opencast mine . The residents of the village are to be relocated to Welzow. Originally, the devastation should take place in 2020, after the coalition negotiations after the state elections in Brandenburg in 2019 , a decision on the opening of subfield II is not to be made until the course of 2020.
