Sibylle Briner (born October 22, 1973 in Lucerne ) is a Swiss pianist .

Life

At the age of five she received her first piano lessons. As a twelve year old she played the solo part in Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1 in a public concert. In 1987 she won first prize at the Hamburg Steinway Competition and then began studying piano with Hubert Harry at the Lucerne Conservatory, which she graduated with "distinction" in 1992 as a qualified pianist. Shortly afterwards she was awarded first prize at the Concorso Musicale Europeo Città di Moncalieri in Turin . In 1993 she received a scholarship from the Dienemann Foundation in Lucerne, which she used for postgraduate studies in Berlin . First she studied with Klaus Hellwig at the University of the Arts (today University of the Arts ) and from 1998 with Georg Sava at the Hanns Eisler University of Music in Berlin-Mitte. In 2001 she graduated from university with the highest grade. In addition, she attended master classes with Leon Fleisher , Malcolm Frager , György Sebők and Murray Perahia . After she auditioned Claudio Abbado - the then chief conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker - he engaged her for a concert as part of the 1997 Berliner Festwochen , which was followed by further Festwochen engagements in 1998 and 2000. In 1998 a CD was released on which she interprets Beethoven's Ghost Trio (op.70/ 1 ), Brahms' Piano Trio op.101 and Trio No. 1 op.8 by Shostakovich together with the violinist Pauliina Quandt-Marttila and the cellist Claudia Benker ( K&K production 1998). A solo recital with virtuoso piano works by Bach , Ravel , Gershwin , Stravinsky , Ginastera , Blacher and Martin was released on a double CD in 2003. In 2010 she took part in the Berlin benefit concert in aid of the earthquake victims in Haiti (“Berlin helps Haiti”), a recording of which was released on CD by the Sony label .

Sibylle Briner has performed as a soloist at many well-known music festivals, such as the Brandenburg Summer Concerts , the Turin Festival, the Lucerne International Music Festival and the Classic Open Air on Berlin's Gendarmenmarkt. As a chamber music partner, she has appeared with various members of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Mandelring Quartet , among others . Together with the pianist Patrizio Mazzola she forms the piano duo "Bern-Berlin". Sibylle Briner also gives regular concerts with her sister, the violinist Isabelle Briner ( Mahler Chamber Orchestra ) and in the “Duo Classic meets Jazz” with the jazz saxophonist Gary Wiggins . With actor Peter Fitz and his daughter Hendrikje Fitz , Sibylle Briner has developed a successful Ravel program based on Jean Echenoz's Ravel book . Since 2008 she has also accompanied tenor Björn Casapietra on grand piano tours across Germany. She has also played many concerts with his half-brother Uwe Hassbecker (guitarist of the rock band Silly ). Occasionally she enriches her programs with improvisations of different styles - from baroque to jazz. Her repertoire ranges from Bach, whom she particularly appreciates, to contemporary music, although she does not make any fundamental distinction between serious and popular music - similar to Kurt Weill , who once said: «I never know the difference between 'serious' and “light” music recognized. There is only good and bad music. " And so she not only performs modern serious music - for example by Caspar Diethelm or Pilar Jurado - but also film music by Michael Nyman or Yann Tiersen .
