Siegfried Lipiner

Siegfried Lipiner (born October 24, 1856 in Jarosław , Galicia , † December 30, 1911 in Vienna ; full name Siegfried Salomo Lipiner ), was a storyteller, playwright , librettist , translator and journalist . In the late 19th century he was considered to be Goethe's legitimate successor.

Life

From 1881 he was librarian at the library of the Austrian Imperial Council , later its director. In 1891 he converted from the Jewish to the Protestant faith. He was one of the friends of the composer and conductor Gustav Mahler , the so-called Lipiner Circle , who chose an ascetic religion of compassion (including strict vegetarianism ) for their program. A rift broke out between the two when Lipiner advised him not to marry Alma Mahler-Werfel .

In 1961, Lipinergasse in Vienna- Liesing was named after him.
