Siegfried Urbank (born January 25, 1928 in Hirschsprung ; † June 13, 1972 in Geising ) was a carver and wood sculptor from the eastern Ore Mountains . He gained national fame primarily through his numerous realistic wooden sculptures.

Life

Siegrfried Urbank was born the sixth child of a family of forest workers in Hirschsprung. As a child he got to know and appreciate nature. Even as a preschooler, he often carved small figures. From 1940 he attended high school in Pirna . Afterwards he lived with his parents and worked in the forest, at the same time he began to earn his living by carving. There he met the arts and crafts teacher Otto Huniek from Teplitz . After being expelled from his home in Altenberg, he wanted to build a new life and founded a woodworking company there. Figures for cornices, wreaths and lights, for example, were sawn out of stored and planed boards. Urbank took over the further processing and he led other carvers. At the suggestion of Huniek to apply to the Dresden Art Academy, he began his studies there in 1947. In technical drawing his professors Josef Hegenbarth and Hans Theo Richter , Professors Eugen Hoffmann and Reinhold Langner taught him the trade plastic . His great role model was the sculptor Ernst Barlach with his impressive expressiveness. In 1949 he finished his studies. and from then on worked freelance in Geising. On May 15, 1949, he married Gudrun, nee Walther, with whom he has two sons.

Freelance

He began his artistic work with popular smaller figures. In particular, the figures of miners, angels, nutcrackers, chip trees and forest workers were the objects in demand. Then came Christmas cribs, miners' parades and pyramids, all with carved figures and objects. A highlight was the wood- carving work Holzfuhrleit for Max Nacke's 70th birthday for the Waldschänke Altes Raupennest . In the 50s he supported the carving group in Glashütte and the carving circle in Geising. He gave lectures and carving demonstrations about Ewald Philipp at the Kulturbund and the adult education center . In his private life, he also engaged in inlay work , together with his friend Richard Zabel. He designed the festival poster for the city's 500th anniversary in 1962.

In the meantime, government agencies have offered him commissioned work. So he made a new wood paneling and decoration of the saloon ceiling for the steamer "Dresden" of the White Fleet in Dresden. Other works were new wood and wall panels with carved motifs for the rebuilt restaurant " Italian village ". For the University of Body and Sport in Leipzig , he worked on decorative door panels for the inner balconies, with the support of the wood sculptor Brigitta Großmann-Lauterbach . Further work followed for the Semperoper in Dresden.

He was happy to make carnival masks for carnival clubs in Germany . An important order, mediated by Dresden Zoo Director Wolfgang Ullrich , was new puppet heads for the Hohnstein puppet theater for a new performance of Faust von Goethe . His numerous exhibitions include a personal exhibition in Lauenstein Castle .
