Arnarfell and Helgafell

The Type 174 is a type of ship from the Sietas shipyard in Hamburg-Neuenfelde . In 2005 the shipyard delivered two units that are used as container ships . The delivery of two further units, which are designed as multi-purpose cargo ships and carry the type designation 174a, took place in 2007.

history

Linda , the first ship of subtype 174a

At the beginning of the 2000s, the Icelandic shipping company Samskip awarded the Sietas shipyard the construction contract for two container ships equipped with loading cranes , which were to be used on scheduled services to / from Reykjavík . The ships were owned by the Bremen- based holding companies Arnarfell GmbH and Helgafell GmbH. The keel laying of both units took place in December 2003. The model ship of the series is the Arnarfell with hull number 1172, which was delivered on January 21, 2005. The delivery of the Helgafell with construction number 1173 took place one month later. The two ships were chartered to shipping company Samskip and put into service by her.

In 2012, Samskip acquired the ships from the German owner companies. They are used in weekly alternation on a circuit starting from Reykjavík (Iceland), whereby they usually Vestmannaeyjar (Iceland), Immingham (Great Britain), Rotterdam (Netherlands), Cuxhaven , Varberg (Sweden), Aarhus (Denmark) and the Faroe Islands - Stop at islands before returning to Reykjavík. The ships need thirteen days for a complete circuit. On the stage from Cuxhaven to Varberg, they use the Kiel Canal to pass into the Baltic Sea .

In 2004, the Finnish shipping company Langh Ship Oy awarded the construction contract for two modified units, which are designed as multi-purpose cargo ships and bear the type designation 174a. Their keel was laid on November 19, 2004. These ships, which are not equipped with loading cranes, have a hull that is 2.7 meters longer and a higher ice class . The Linda with hull number 1230 was delivered as the first ship on February 8, 2007 . The second ship, the Aila with hull number 1231, was taken over by Langh Ship OY on March 27, 2007. Both units are used in feeder traffic to / from Finland.

technology

Type 174

In contrast to the open-top container ships of the Type 168 , which were manufactured in parallel, the Type 174 has four box-shaped cargo holds with hatch covers . It is a further development of the Type 172 , which was manufactured until 2003 , and like this one has a 137.53 meter long hull that is classified for an ice thickness of up to 80 centimeters ( ice class E3). Obvious differences to the previous series are the two loading cranes with a load capacity of 45 t each, the side walls raised amidships and a bulwark shifted towards the bow , making the open foredeck smaller and creating storage space for an additional row of containers on deck. The Type 174 can carry up to 909 20-foot standard containers (TEU). The carrying capacity of both units is 11,143  dwt . With an average weight of 14 t per container, a maximum of 569 TEU can be loaded for reasons of stability. The ships are suitable for transporting containers with special dimensions (30 and 45 feet). All four holds are equipped with cell guides. There are connections for 200 refrigerated containers on board , 100 of them in the holds. The Arnarfell and Helgafell be of a 8400  kW paid marine diesel engine of the type MAN driven 7L48 / 60B to a via a reduction gear pitch propeller acts. They have an electrically powered bow thruster with an output of 800 kW for berthing and casting off maneuvers . For power generation on board is u. a. a wave generator is available.

Type 174a

The two units of subtype 174a, Linda and Aila , are 141.2 meters long and 21.55 meters wide. Both ships are classified for ice thicknesses of up to 100 centimeters (ice class E4). The Linda has a dead weight of 11,487  dwt , the Aila of 11,497 dwt. Both ships can carry up to 907 TEU or, alternatively, a maximum of 420 40-foot containers (FEU) plus 67 TEU. The cargo holds have a volume of 15,732 m³ and a capacity of 282 TEU. The hatch covers of cargo holds 1 and 2 are designed for a load capacity of 50 t (TEU) or 80 t (FEU) per container stack, those of hatches 3 and 4 for 60 t (TEU) and 90 t (FEU) per stack . The tank ceiling in cargo holds 1 and 2 can be loaded with 96 t per container stack (TEU) or 130 t (FEU), the tank ceiling in cargo holds 3 and 4 with 140 t (TEU) or 145 t (FEU). As with the Type 174, the four cargo holds are equipped with cell guides. There are also connections for 200 refrigerated containers on board.

The Linda and Aila are powered by an 8L46C marine diesel engine with an output of 8,400 kW from the Finnish manufacturer Wärtsilä and, like the Arnarfell and Helgafell, have a bow thruster with an output of 800 kW. The shipping company Langh Ship OY retrofitted its two ships with a gas washer .
