The Silja Serenade of the Finnish shipping company Tallink-Silja is used on the Helsinki - Mariehamn - Stockholm route. She was built in 1990 at the Masa shipyard (now Meyer Turku ) in Turku , Finland .

history

The ship was ordered by Effoa on October 26, 1987 for the Silja Line traffic. On May 29, 1989 the ship was laid down in Turku. On October 23, 1989 the ship floated up in dry dock and left the construction dock on January 19, 1990. On April 2, 1990, the ship was christened by Birgitta Ulfsson. On November 15, 1990, the ship was delivered to EffJohn Oy and sailed under the Finnish flag with its home port Helsingfors. On November 17, 1990, the Silja Line ship was put into service between Helsinki and Stockholm.

The ship was a revolution in cruise ferry design. The Silja Serenade was the world's first ship to have a continuous promenade over the entire length of the ship. Among other things, the promenade made it possible to almost double the number of cabins with windows (today, such promenades can be found on almost all cruise ships operated by Royal Caribbean and the Meraviglia class ships from MSC Cruises , as well as on the so-called cruise ships with a car deck of the Color Line ). In contrast to the newer ships with a shopping mile, the two sister ships of the Silja Line, the Silja Serenade and the Silja Symphony, do not have adequate fire protection gates in the promenade. However, since the route of the ships runs close to the coast and a highly efficient sprinkler system has been installed in the area of the promenade, the two ships have been granted a special permit.

On November 15, 1990, the Silja Serenade was handed over to EffJohn OY , which was founded by the merger of Effoa and Johnson Line, and was used on the Helsinki – Stockholm route. Their home port became Helsinki , Finland .

As early as 1992, the home port was changed to Mariehamn and, thanks to the lower tax burden, it was possible to earn more money with the on-board casino. When the Silja Europa went into operation in 1993, the Silja Serenade was moved to the Turku – Mariehamn – Stockholm route. It quickly became clear, however, that the Silja Serenade was not suitable for this route. In addition to the lack of facilities for day trips, the ship in the Turku archipelago was difficult to steer. The Silja Serenade swapped its route with the Silja Europa in 1995 and has since operated the Helsinki – Stockholm route with the Silja Symphony . In order to be able to continue offering duty-free shopping on the ships after the changes to the EU duty-free regulations , Mariehamn was introduced in June 1999 as a stopover on the Helsinki – Stockholm route.

From January to February 2006 the Silja Serenade and the Silja Symphony at Luonnonmaan telakka in Naantali were completely renovated. Shortly thereafter, Silja Line was taken over by the Estonian Tallink Group .

Sister ship

The Silja Serenade has a sister ship, the Silja Symphony . There are differences between the sister ships. The outer decks on the Silja Serenade are green, while on the Silja Symphony they are painted blue. The eyes of the seal on the chimney of the Silja Serenade are white with a blue border, while the seal on the Silja Symphony has blue eyes. The lamp box with the ship's name is illuminated in blue on the Silja Serenade , while the name of the Silja Symphony lights up in blue letters on a white background. The uppermost deck superstructures of the sister ship are made of aluminum, which is why the Silja Serenade is a little heavier and has a higher center of gravity, which leads to somewhat poorer properties in rough seas.
