The Silja Symphony of the Finnish shipping company Tallink-Silja is used on the Helsinki - Mariehamn - Stockholm route. She was built in 1991 at the Masa shipyard (now Meyer Turku Oy ) in Turku , Finland .

history

The ship was ordered on March 21, 1988. On June 4, 1990 the ship was laid down, the launching followed on November 15, 1990. On January 21, 1991 the ship was christened by Alice Babs . On May 8, 1991 the ship went on a test drive. During the construction of the Silja Symphony , the then shipyard Wärtsilä Marine went bankrupt, whereupon the delivery to Oy Svea Line Finland Ab was delayed by several months to May 30, 1991. The ship sailed under the Swedish flag with home port Stockholm. The ship then began operating between Helsinki and Stockholm on May 31, 1991 . The Silja Symphony and its sister ship the Silja Serenade were the largest cruise ferries in the world when they were commissioned and were the first ships to have a continuous promenade over the entire length of the ship. In contrast to the newer ships with a shopping mile, the two sisters of the Silja Line do not have adequate fire protection gates in the promenade. The ships are therefore only permitted for traffic with a special permit, on the grounds that the route runs relatively close to the coast.

In contrast to the previously built sister ship Silja Serenade , the chimney structure of the Silja Symphony was not made of steel , but of lighter aluminum , which resulted in weight savings.

On February 7, 1996, the Silja Symphony ran aground in the Stockholm archipelago at 7:08 p.m. , but was able to free itself one day later. The ship drove back to Stockholm and was examined there. Small damage was then repaired in Helsinki.

In December of the same year, their machines were equipped with exhaust gas cleaning systems in order to reduce the emission of nitrogen oxides . In order to be able to continue offering duty-free shopping on the “Swedish ships” after the changes to the EU duty-free regulations , Mariehamn was introduced as a stopover on the Helsinki - Stockholm route in June 1999 .

On August 6, 2001, a school of fish was sucked through the cooling system of the machines and clogged it. This led to overheating and shutdown of the engines, which caused the ship to blackout for 15 minutes. As a result of this incident, the ship was only able to reach Helsinki about 1.5 hours late.

In January 2004 and 2005 the Silja Symphony made two cruises each to Tallinn .

In January and February 2006 the Silja Symphony and Silja Serenade at Luonnonmaan telakka in Naantali were completely renovated. Shortly thereafter, Silja Line was taken over by the Estonian Tallink Group . On January 9, 2007, the Silja Symphony rammed a gangway in the port of Mariehamn during a storm, causing damage of around 600,000 euros .

Sister ship

The Silja Serenade has a sister ship, the Silja Symphony . There are differences between the sister ships. The outer decks on the Silja Symphony are light blue, while on the Silja Serenade they are painted green. The eyes of the seal on the chimney of the Silja Symphony are blue, while the seal on the Silja Serenade has white eyes with a blue border. The lamp box with the ship's name is illuminated in white on the Silja Symphony , while the name of the Silja Serenade lights up in white letters on a blue background.
