Simon Oates

Simon Oates (* 6. January 1932 in London as Arthur Charles Oates ; † 20th May 2009 in Eastbourne , East Sussex ) was a British actor in film, television and theater. His acting career included more than 40 appearances in movies and television series. He was best known for his role as Dr. John Ridge on the BBC series Doomwatch in the early 1970s.

life and career

Simon Oates was born in 1932 as Arthur Charles Oates in the eastern London borough of Canning Town . During his youth, he first trained as a heating engineer for his father's company before starting a career as an actor. After his military service in the Intelligence Corps , he became a theater worker in the 1950s and was, among other things, leading actor at the York Theater Royal for a few years , later Simon Oates also appeared in 1971 as John Steed in the stage adaptation of The Avengers alongside Sue Lloyd and Kate O'Mara . In addition, Oates also played in London's West End z. B. in the Francis Durbridge thriller Suddenly at Home . Oates has worked extensively in theater in the UK, the West End and throughout his career as both an actor and a theater director. For some time he also lived in Canada , where he ran a touring theater.

His television career began in 1959 with an appearance on the BBC Sunday-Night Theater series . Simon Oates' numerous other series appearances from 1959 to 1993 included: Armchair Theater , With Umbrella, Charm and Melon , The Man with the Suitcase , Department S , Jason King , Die Profis , Remington Steele and Jim Bergerac determined .

He played more complex TV roles as the Duke of Buckingham from 1966 to 1967 in the television miniseries The Three Musketeers directed by Peter Hammond based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas , furthermore in the agent series The Spies where he played the character in 15 episodes from 1966 onwards of Anthony Kelly and in the television series Doomwatch from 1970 to 1972 where he played the part of Dr. John Ridge played.

Simon Oates ended his film and television career in 1993 with an appearance on the Comedy Playhouse . He died on May 20, 2009 at the age of 77 in Eastbourne, East Sussex. His son Justin Brett from his marriage to model Jaki Eastoe also became an actor.

In 1971, Simon Oates was briefly traded seriously for the role of James Bond's successor to George Lazenby for the Bond production Diamond Fever , but after Sean Connery announced his return as 007 agent, Oates was out of the running.
