Xining ( Chinese 西寧 / 西宁 , Pinyin Xīníng - "Western calm (peace)", Tib . : zi ling ) is the capital of the Chinese province of Qinghai . The administrative area of Xinings has an area of 7,472 km² and around 2.21 million inhabitants (2010 census).

Administrative structure
As a district-free city , Xining is made up of four districts , two districts and one autonomous district. These are:
- Chengzhong district (城中 区 = "city center"), 11 km², 150,000 inhabitants, seat of the city government;
- Chengdong District (城东 区 = "East City"), 115 km², 230,000 inhabitants;
- Chengxi district (城西 区 = "West City "), 79 km², 220,000 inhabitants;
- Chengbei District (城北区 = "North City"), 138 km², 200,000 inhabitants;
- Huangzhong District (湟 中 区), 2,430 km², 470,000 inhabitants;
- District Huang Yuan (湟源县) 1,609 km², 140,000 inhabitants, capital: greater community Chengguan (城关镇);
- Datong Autonomous County of Hui (大通 回族 土族 自治县), 3,090 km², 430,000 inhabitants, main town: Qiaotou municipality (桥头 镇).

The 2010 census found that the administrative area was 74.04% Han , 16.26% Hui , 5.51% Tibetan and 2.6% Tu .
history
The city goes with its foundation in the 2nd century BC. BC to a Chinese garrison of the Han period and experienced various nomadic and Chinese empires as sovereigns in the rollercoaster of history.
In the Tibetan cultural region of Amdo she was, along with other since the Han Dynasty established outpost, the center of a Han settlement in a habitat that is increasingly with the development of the Tibetan empire in the 7th century to the confrontation space between Tibetans and Han was, but also an important hub of trade and cultural exchange.
The city, which still had around 50,000 inhabitants in the 1940s, has now become a city of millions. Although Xining is a modern industrial center, the Tibetans with economic activities are increasingly present in the cityscape.
Since 2015, it has been possible to take the Lhasa train from the new station in Xining . The drive to Lhasa takes around 17 hours with various short stops.
Culture
In the Tibetan Cultural Museum in Xining u. the world's longest thankga can be visited. It measures 618 meters in length and 2.5 meters in width and contains everything about Tibetan history and culture. Around 40 km from Xining, one of the most important Tibetan temple complexes can be visited, the Kumbum Temple .
earthquake
The Gulang earthquake of 1927 , which also struck Xining, occurred on May 23, 1927 and reached a value of 7.6 on the Richter scale . 41,000 people lost their lives in the widespread quake. There were also major land shifts in the process.
