history
In 1505 the arm of the Wadden Sea , called Middelzee , was partly polded. Oudebildtzijl soon emerged along the 14 km long dike. Since the dike builders and colonists were not Frisians but Dutch , including many Catholics from the vicinity of Dordrecht , a separate community emerged that spoke a Dutch dialect. In the early 17th century a new polder was created around Nieuwebildtzijl. The ending zijl means "Siel".
