action

The United States in 1963 : Lydia Callahan is a single mother with a sexually dissolute lifestyle who became pregnant when she was a teenager. Since her father Caspar wants to run for governor and fears damage to his image, he forces Lydia to move with her son Sam to the distant town of GroVont in Wyoming.

14-year-old Sam dreams of a fantasy girl. He soon meets Maurey Pierce, who lives in the neighborhood, with whom he becomes intimate. His mother gives him sex education lessons in a restaurant, but then expresses doubts to a friend about whether this was the right thing to do. Sam and Maurey sleep together, Maurey becomes pregnant. Lydia has several affairs, including with Hank, an Indian from the Blackfeet tribe. She doesn't want to tie herself tight.

Lydia's father appears in town and tries to persuade her to return; Sam is supposed to go to a military school. Lydia refuses, although her decision means that her father's money payments will not materialize. She finds work as a waitress and a cheap house to live in. Hank becomes her life partner, while Sam takes care of his child.

Quote

Sam (to Maurey): "We'll have a fuck then."
Lydia (piqued): "Don't say that so clearly. The world collapses if you talk too openly about birds."
Maurey (grinning): "Oh. Let's go ... read comics."
Lydia (grinning): "Yes, that's good."
