history
Celebrity cruises
The ship was built in 1995 at the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg ( Germany ) as Century for Celebrity Cruises and left the construction dock on October 2, 1995. It was christened on October 26, 1995 and taken over by the shipping company on November 30, 1995. It was put into service on December 20, 1995. In April 2006, the ship was modernized during a five-week dry dock period at the Ficantieri shipyard in Palermo ( Italy ) and renamed Celebrity Century in February 2008 .
SkySea Cruises
In 2013 it was first announced that Celebrity Cruises would hand over the ship to CDF Croisières de France in 2015 , who wanted to use it as Century .
However, the owner Royal Caribbean Cruises announced in 2014 that it had sold the ship to the Chinese CTrip Holding with handover in 2015. It was later announced that, from May 2015, the ship would be known as the Skysea Golden Era of the newly established SkySea Cruises brand , a joint venture between Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. and CTrip should be used. The last cruise as Celebrity Century ended in Singapore on April 19, 2015 , after which the ship was converted at the Sembawang shipyard. At the end of April, the ship was named Skysea Golden Era and left on May 29 for her first cruise. At the beginning of September 2018, SkySea Cruises ceased operating the Skysea Golden Era and the brand was discontinued.
Marella Cruises
From January to March 2019, the ship was rebuilt in Cadiz and renamed Marella Explorer 2 in February . The Marella Explorer 2 was christened on March 30, 2019 in Málaga and left for its maiden voyage on April 2, 2019.
