Smallfoot is a computer animation film from 2018. It is based on the children's book Yeti Tracks by Sergio Pablos . In Germany it was released in cinemas on October 11, 2018.

action

The yetis live high up in the snow-capped mountains above the cloud cover, where they go about their business without a care. Their laws are "carved" in stones, which the stone guardian, the village elder, wears as a cloak. The young Migo meets a crashed pilot outside the village, a "smallfoot", as the Yetis call the people who, according to their rules, are not allowed to exist. The other yetis don't believe him and he is banished from the village for telling the untruth. There he meets Meechee, the stoneman's daughter, who has formed a committee with several other Yetis to collect evidence of the existence of the Smallfoots. Since the pilot parachuted down, they decide that Migo will let himself rappel through the cloud cover. Although the stones say that there shouldn't be anything there, Migo finds, to his surprise, a beautiful landscape.

Documentary filmmaker Percy is making a film about the wildlife of the Himalayas . He would think it would be great to be able to present a yeti in his film, and for this purpose he has got a yeti costume for his colleague Brenda, who does not want to participate in this fraud. When Percy meets the giant Migo, he tries to drive him away with a bow and arrow, as he perceives his language as an aggressive roar. When Percy passes out, Migo grabs him to present to the village community as proof that the Smallfoot really exists. On the way, the two gain trust when Migo saves Percy from a bear and, conversely, Percy frees Migo from a bear trap. Percy enthusiastically takes pictures of the Yetis with his smartphone and sends them to Brenda. Percy and the Yetis can exchange ideas via drawings on the rock walls. However, the stone guardian still claims that there are no small feet and that Percy is a special type of yak . Since this is not taken from him, he leads Migo into a cave system, where rock paintings depict how people brutally persecuted the yetis in the past. That is why the yetis have withdrawn to the high mountains where humans cannot live. The cloud wall is artificially created by an apparatus in the mountain in order to isolate itself from people. The stone rules were invented to protect the yetis. Impressed by this, Migo now also denies the existence of the small foot.

Percy, who is now suffering from altitude sickness , is put in a box and taken into the mountain. From there, Meechee can bring him back down into the valley. Migo and the friends on the committee jump down too. Meechee has discovered a village and is delighted by the people and buildings that are cute for her. However, she unintentionally causes chaos and damage and is followed by the police. The friends can save them, but the group is being followed. The stone guardian can crash a helicopter with his stones. Percy, who was following on his snowmobile, shoots a tranquilizer arrow at Migo. Supposedly, however, this can still attract the attention of the persecutors so that the others can flee. When he is caught by the police, however, it turns out that it is Percy in a yeti costume who is arrested. In the Yeti Village, Migo and the Stone Guardian clarify the truth. The steam generation for the cloud is stopped and the village community goes to the people in the valley, where the police shield the residents. When Percy and Brenda break the barrier, the spell is broken, and yetis and humans approach each other with curiosity.

reception

The film critic Antje Wessels thinks that the film is a prime example of “how filmmakers can subliminally enrich their project with more than just gags and a harmless 'If you only want, you can do anything!' Message like her in the family cinema has meanwhile become a common practice ”. That would let Smallfoot "stand out from the mass of animation productions", which can only be said to a limited extent about the technical design.

Cinema.de judges: “With bright colors, rhythmic pop songs and a large portion of joie de vivre, the Yeti myth is completely turned on its head here. In addition to the tried and tested slapstick interludes, the language barrier between humans and yeti in particular ensures a lot of laughs. And, as is so often the case, there is even more to the cheerful story of friendship and courage - the invitation to always remain curious. "
