The Sommelier Union Germany e. V. is a national professional association for sommeliers founded in 1976 . The Sommelier Union is a registered association based in Aschaffenburg , Lower Franconia . The union represents the interests of over 1000 members from the catering , hotel and wine trade. She represents the German sommeliers in the World Association de la Sommellerie Internationale (ASI).

history

The association was founded in 1976. From 1999 to 2018 the Union was the organizer of the industry event Chillout Weissrot as part of the ProWein trade fair . Since 2018, the sommelier aperitif has been held at the fair instead. In addition, there is the Sommelier College funding program for young talents, which has been offered since 2001. Every two years from 2011 onwards, the Award for Best Sommelier in Germany - Trophy Sommelier Union Germany is presented. In 2018 the association's headquarters were relocated from Coburg , Upper Franconia, to Aschaffenburg . The office is located in Cologne .

tasks

The club has the statutory task of "defend the occupational interests of the profession 'Sommelier'." To this end, as an interest group, it promotes professional exchange between sommeliers - nationally and internationally and is a member of the ASI, the " Association de la Sommellerie Internationale " founded in Reims , France in 1969 . There he represents German interests.

In addition to networking the members, the tasks also include continuing education . The then Vice President, winemaker and restaurateur Fritz Keller was one of the initiators of the state-certified sommelier degree . "The wide range of requirements requires a well-founded educational offer that was designed in cooperation with the Sommelier-Union Deutschland eV."

The Sommelier College has existed since 2001, in which young talents are promoted part-time over the course of three years. This has been looked after by master sommelier Frank Kämmer since 2014 . Regularly offered regional events as well as trips to the most important wine-growing regions are also part of the tasks in the field of further education.

"The purpose of the association's articles of association is realized through public relations work, which arouses interest in wine culture in gastronomy, in the wine trade and in wine production and promotes the sommelier's reputation." The result of this public relations work is publications such as in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, where on February 25, 2017, an extensive article by Martin Maria Schwarz on the subject of what makes a sommelier appeared. In the blog post “What does a sommelier actually do”, Astrid Paul takes up the topic of other sommeliers in her blog “Arthur's daughter cooks” . With the well-known saying you never stop learning! The member of the Advisory Board of the Sommelier Union, Philipp Künemund, ends his interview with the magazine TrinkTime, in which he is asked about the future prospects of the sommelier profession. The Berliner Tagesspiegel reported on the exemplary career of a young sommelier on January 19, 2015.

The association is also regularly asked for comments by regional and national press representatives. Official association representatives at DRadio Wissen were quoted on the current topic of Orange Wine . Occasionally the dpa themed service makes use of the sommelier union, as shown by articles on sherry and buying tips for wine glasses. Wirtschaftswoche editors also ask the association representatives for their opinion on specialist topics such as wine apps or corked wine .

In 2011, the association held the Sommelier Trophy in Germany as its successor at an international level for the first time in cooperation with the Relais & Châteaux hotel association. The winner of the 2011 competition was Thomas Sommer from the Schloss Lerbach gourmet restaurant . In 2013 Markus Berlinghof from the Hotel Louis C. Jacob won the competition. The competition, which is held every two years, was carried out completely independently by the association for the first time in 2015. The winner was Torsten Junker from the Hotel Louis C. Jacob . Various media reported about the 2015 Trophy. In addition to reporting in specialist journals such as meiningers Sommelier , the AHGZ, Falstaff and the restaurant rankings, general media such as Wirtschaftswoche published articles about the competition. In 2017, Marc Almert from the pavilion in the Baur au Lac in Zurich won the Sommelier Trophy, as reported by the AHGZ. The winner of the German competition usually represents the Sommelier Union at international competitions organized by ASI, such as the European and World Cup.

In addition to the national competition organized by the association, the European and World Championships are held every three years by the World Association ASI. So far the only German ASI European Sommelier Champion was Bernd Kreis in 1992. In 1998, the longstanding vice president of the association, Markus Del Monego, became the first German sommelier world champion at ASI. In March 2019, Cologne-born Marc Almert prevailed and won against 65 other candidates from 63 countries at the ASI Sommelier World Championship, which was held in Antwerp , Belgium .

The association sends members to the specialist jury for other competitions, for example the Sommelier Cup of the German Wine Institute .
