action

Miriam is on vacation with her partner André, her 15-year-old son Nils and his 12-year-old friend Livia (who looks much older) near Schleswig an der Schlei . Livia soon meets the 38-year-old American Bill, who owns a house nearby, while sailing. Since Miriam is responsible for her during the holidays, she observes with concern that there might be more going on between Bill and Livia than a casual holiday flirtation. Her husband tries to talk her out of it. But whenever Livia has disappeared for a long time, Miriam looks for her at Bill's. Miriam falls in love with Bill more and more and starts an affair with him. After they have slept together again, he confesses that he is in love with Livia and that he wants to end the affair. Miriam explains to him that such a relationship is impossible, even punishable, with the thought that Livia is her rival.

The next day the whole family goes on a sailing trip with Bill. Since they travel with two boats, Livia wants to see Bill, but Miriam insists that she sail with her. On the way, Livia is hit by the tree of the sail and injured in the head. A short time later she collapses in the boat and dies. While preparations are being made for Livia's funeral, Miriam is drawn back to Bill. She leaves André and follows Bill, who is returning to America.

Years later, Livia's parents arrange to meet Miriam and Bill in a hotel in Germany. Livia's father gives the impression that he is already a pensioner and therefore much older than her mother. She reads a letter from Livia to a friend. It says that Miriam and André do not match and that she wants to bring Miriam and Bill together.

Reviews

According to the lexicon of international film , the film is "excellently played and impressively photographed" and, as a "allusive and meaningful film, it combines the nonchalance and casualness of French cinema with a profound reflection on the sexual as a driving force in human and social life" as well as "the silence and the insincerity in dealing with generations".

Summer '04 is a subtly told and staged family drama with excellent actors. "In it, Stefan Krohmer and Daniel Nocke portray the liberal philistineism, as cultivated by the grown-up 1960s children," said Martina Knoben in her review for epd Film .

The film magazine Schnitt is of the opinion that the film plays confidently with several cinematic languages by "combining elements of the French romance film in the tradition of Éric Rohmer with the 'sadistic realism' à la Haneke and also flirting with the classic psychological thriller". In doing so, director Stefan Krohmer succeeds in “tracing the attitude to life in a society in which repressed emotions recur in the most refined and sometimes deviant forms”.
