Summer Girl was a TV show by ProSieben that aired in two seasons in 2009 and 2011. The format contained elements of casting and reality game shows , it was partly reminiscent of the casting show Germany's Next Topmodel , although it was about games and not modeling jobs.

Moderation

The show was hosted by Charlotte Engelhardt and Steven Gätjen in 2009 and by Jana Ina and Giovanni Zarrella in 2011 .

concept

According to ProSieben, the aim of the program was to award the title of summer girl to the “German dream woman”, who had to be beautiful, smart, sporty, elegant, funny and courageous . In addition, the candidates competed in mostly sporting competitions.

The winner won a photo shoot for FHM , a trip, a reporter job at taff and 10,000 euros.

procedure

2009

In the run-up to the show, there was a casting on May 16, 2009 in Cologne , in which 17 candidates between the ages of 18 and 28 were selected from 539 applicants. Each candidate ran for a state on the show . North Rhine-Westphalia was initially represented twice, but ProSieben had decided on a representative before the actual production began.

In order to determine the summer girl, various competitions were held in Cambrils on the Costa Daurada in Spain in a holiday camp and in the surrounding areas, most of which had at least some to do with sport, and in which the women could collect points.

Part of the program was the so-called “body check”. The candidates were evaluated by a jury in each program according to different criteria and received points depending on their performance. The jury consisted of Martino, a record producer from Los Angeles who was born in Frankfurt according to ProSieben , and his friend Nana, who is the event organizer. Guest jurors appeared in some episodes. In episode 2, Klaas Heufer-Umlauf acted as a juror for high diving . With regard to the taff reporter job advertised as part of the prize money, Annemarie Warnkross tested the candidates in episode 3 for their suitability as moderators .

In each broadcast, the five women with the fewest points had to pack their bags. Before the final departure, the moderators decided who was still allowed to stay.

2011

The second season ran largely along the same lines as the first. Competitions this time were u. a. an aerobatic challenge, a beach volleyball challenge and a hangwoman challenge as well as a rubber dinghy race in episode 5.

Winners

Nina Weis (23 at the time) won the 2009 summer girl title by one point. Although she represented Rhineland-Palatinate, at the time of the victory she lived in Königswinter in neighboring North Rhine-Westphalia. Since June 2013 she has hosted the clip show Clipmasters on Sport1 . Second place went to 19-year-old Katharina M. from Saxony-Anhalt, who was already in the final selection of Miss Germany 2009.

In 2011 Annika from Frankfurt am Main was able to prevail just ahead of Sally B. from Hamburg as the winner. Third was Sophia T. from Bonn .

Broadcasts and ratings

The first season was broadcast on Saturdays at 8:15 p.m., the second season on Thursdays at 8:15 p.m.

With the first four broadcasts from July 4 to July 25, 2019, Sommermädchen 2009 did not reach a double-digit rate in the advertising-relevant target group of 14 to 49 year olds. The program remained well below the channel average and the quotas of Germany's Next Top Model . Only episode 5 from August 1st could reach the channel average. The six episodes were repeated the next day, Sunday morning

Due to disastrous ratings, summer girl 2011 was taken out of the evening program at short notice after only two episodes. The remaining episodes were only broadcast on the repeat date, on Fridays at 4 p.m., most recently on August 12, 2011.

Reviews

“Germany has opened up another dimension of humiliation television. 'Summer Girl 2009' is the name of the format that even Til Schweiger's slippery old man's fantasy 'Mission Hollywood' undercuts on RTL "

- Spiegel Online

Spiegel Online emphasized that the show created a sexist impression, among other things the camera position “at navel piercing height” and the price of a photo shoot for the FHM contributed to this. In this article and in the ProSieben forum for the broadcast, the body check was criticized in particular, as the two judges made subjective decisions and viewers and critics had doubts about the prominence of the two as stated by ProSieben. The way in which they carried out the preliminary decision, a reduction of the candidates to the five best in their opinion, was also criticized, namely by pushing the losers into the pool in front of which the women had lined up.

“Well, getting blown-out-eggs-safe-down-a-water-slide is not exactly a task for admission to philosophy studies. Nevertheless, at the beginning you are almost inclined to find it sympathetic that the candidates are not examined for their fat content, but have to prove their talent in tug-of-war. "

- Süddeutsche Zeitung

"The roles are clearly divided between Gätjen and Engelhardt: While he moderates surprisingly uninhibited from the abdomen ('Here they come: summer beauties, bulging with ambition'), she mimes the good friend for the female casting victims."

- Spiegel Online

“And the sense of it all? There is no! Because the one who gets the title will certainly not be the new star in the celebrity sky. The fame of the summer girls will probably soon end with Sonja Zietlow as one of the 'Ten Most Embarrassing TV Series of All Time'. "

- Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger

“You don't know whether Pro Sieben has a soul. But if it does, then yesterday at the latest she drove towards Hell. With a colder smile [...] no broadcaster has sneaked under the bar and declared this act as TV entertainment. "
