Sonic Advance 3 is a 2D platformers Run - computer game , which of Sonic Team developed and Dimps and Sega for the first time in North America on June 7, 2004 for the Game Boy Advance was released. It is the third part of the trilogy and is based on the original games from the Sega Mega Drive .

It is the successor to Sonic Advance 2 (2002) and the predecessor to Sonic Rush (2005).

action

The evil scientist Dr. Eggman has managed to use the data from Emerl (see Sonic Battle ) to create a loyal copy called G-merl . Through an experiment with the Chaos Emeralds, Dr. Eggman does great damage and tears the earth apart. Here are Sonic and Tails of Knuckles , Amy and Cream separately. You are on your way, Dr. Eggman teach a lesson and gradually find each other again.

Towards the end, the heroes Dr. Defeat Eggman with his Hyper Eggrobo and G-merl and undo the damage with the power of the Master Emerald. If Sonic has collected all seven Chaos Emeralds in the process, G-merl absorbs their mystical power and takes on a new, more powerful form called Ultimate G-merl , with which he stands up against his creator Dr. Eggman turns. In the final space showdown, Super Sonic and Dr. Eggman work together to stop the runaway Ultimate G-merl . Later, Tails finds the destroyed G-merl on the beach. In a post-credits scene you can see G-merl living peacefully with Cream and Vanilla.

Gameplay

In Sonic Advance 3 , the player can choose to take control of the blue hedgehog Sonic (has a variant of the Homing Attack without a target search function in the air), the two-tailed fox Tails (can fly in the air and swim underwater), the last Echidna Knuckles (can slide in the air and climb certain walls), the young bunny girl Cream with her Chao Cheese (can fly in the air) or the hedgehog Amy Rose (can use her Piko Piko hammer to defeat opponents) in a side-scrolling 2D -Jump-'n'-Run. The peculiarity of this game is that two characters are always on the move at the same time (comparable to Knuckles' Chaotix ) and, as soon as you have unlocked them in the game, you can freely choose between the five characters and put together teams to choose from different special abilities in the worlds . Depending on the team, certain additional moves can be carried out with the R button.

The level design adapts to the dynamic, fast feel of the game with springs, loops and more. In addition to the control pad for movement, only one action button is required to jump. In jumping or rolling form, called Spin Attack , all characters except Amy can defeat opponents or open item boxes on the screen of which the respective item is displayed. If you let the character duck down with the directional pad and then press and release the jump button, the character with the Spin Dash can quickly dash forward from a standing position with the Spin Attack . When touched, the golden rings can be collected; If the pawn takes damage, it loses the rings. If the character takes damage without having rings or falls into a deadly abyss, he loses an extra life, of which you have three at the start of the game. If you collect 100 rings, you get another extra life. The item boxes can also contain an extra life, five rings, ten rings, any number of rings, a protective shield, a magnetic protective shield, temporary increased speed or temporary invulnerability. Checkpoints in the form of lanterns mark the reset point in the event of a loss of life. Points are also collected in all actions, which in turn can give "continues" so that the game can continue despite the loss of all extra lives. Most opponents can be defeated with the Spin Attack, which scores points and frees the trapped animals. It is also possible to grind on certain rails and places.

The game consists of nine zones ( Route 99 , Sunset Hill , Ocean Base , Toy Kingdom , Twinkle Snow , Cyber Track , Chaos Angel , Altar Emerald, and Nonaggression ), of which the first seven zones are made up of three acts (the last two zones have only one act), which can be defined as levels and are connected by their own upper worlds. Each zone has its own theme, appearance and variety of opponents. The upper worlds can be entered via the Sonic Factory , in which you choose your characters. In addition to the three acts in each zone, there are two additional entrances to bonus stages and a final boss fight against the adversary Dr. Eggman and one of his deadly machines, which only opens after all three acts have been completed, whereby the acts can be played among themselves in any order. In each zone, a total of ten chao are hidden in the acts and on the upper world, which must be found. If all ten chao of a zone are found, special keys can be found in the individual acts , which then open previously locked special springs on the upper world , which lead to the special stage . There you have to collect a given number of rings with the Tornado 2 in order to get a Chaos Emerald. The final zone of nonaggression can only be reached if you play Sonic and have collected all seven Chaos Emeralds beforehand.

The multiplayer mode can be contested if two to four Game Boy Advances are connected with a Game Boy Advance Game Link Cable. If the other players also have the game Sonic Advance 3 as a module in their system, all regular zones can be contested in one race in the Multi-Pak Battle . Everyone controls only one character and there are two teams. If there are three players, a computer-controlled player is added for one of the teams. There are also four item boxes: Confusion , Warp , Attack and Brake . If the other players do not own the game, in the single-pak battle without teams there is only a separate section of Sunset Hill available and instead of a race you have to find a chao. There is also a time attack mode. Compared to its predecessors, the Tiny Chao Garden has been removed in Sonic Advance 3 .

synchronization

Unlike its predecessors, Sonic Advance 3 has voice output. A large part of the voice samples was taken from other, previously released Sonic games. In this game, the American voice actor Deem Bristow, who died on January 15, 2005, was the voice of Dr. Eggman using existing sound clips.

Sonic Advance 3 received positive reviews across the board. The level design was praised, the elementary team function caused mixed opinions. The game won the Handheld Game of the Year title at the 2004 Golden Joystick Awards .

From a commercial perspective, the game fell far short of expectations with a total of 143,000 units sold worldwide. This is partly due to the rather late release within the life span of the Game Boy Advance .
