Sophia of Pomerania († 1568)
Princess Sophia of Pomerania (* 1498 in Stettin ; † May 13, 1568 in Kiel ) was married to Queen of Denmark and Norway , as well as Duchess of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf .
Life
Sophia was born as the eldest daughter of Duke Bogislaw X the Great of Pomerania (1454-1523) and Princess Anna (1476-1503), daughter of the Polish King Casimir IV .
On October 9, 1518 Sophia married in Schleswig widowed Duke Frederick I of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp (1471-1533), fourth son of King Christian I of Denmark and Dorothea of Brandenburg . Frederick became King of Denmark and Norway in 1523, but Sophia was only crowned Queen of Denmark on August 13, 1525 in Copenhagen a year after him . As treasure trove , she received the Kiel and Plön castles along with some Holstein offices and villages, as well as the Danish islands of Lolland and Falster .
After her husband's death in 1533, when the Danish Imperial Council had not yet agreed whether he wanted to succeed Christian , Friedrich's son from his first marriage, or Sophia's eldest son Johann , who was only twelve years old, as his successor, she moved with her children to Gottorf Castle . There she also spent the time of the count's feud , during which her possessions were occupied. Her court lady Anne Meinstrup (1475-1535) allied herself with Christoph von Oldenburg and was murdered in 1535.
In 1538 her stepson, the king, claimed the castle for himself and asked her to retire to her Wittum. She spent the rest of her life in Kiel Castle. She saw her lands as her private property and argued with her stepson and also with his son and successor Frederick II over the right to administer the income and appoint officials .
Sophia died in 1568 and was buried in the cathedral church in Schleswig .
