Sophinette Becker

Sophinette Becker (born December 15, 1950 in Lindau im Bodensee ; † October 24, 2019 ) was a German psychoanalytic psychotherapist and sexologist .

Life

Becker was the daughter of the education professor Hellmut Becker and the German-French children's book author Antoinette Becker . She studied at the University of Frankfurt am Main with a degree in psychology (1978) and received her doctorate in 2007 from the University of Hanover . From 1979 to 1988 she worked as an assistant at the Psychosomatic Clinic at the University of Heidelberg , and from 1989 at the Institute for Sexology at the University Clinic in Frankfurt . After its dissolution in 2006, she headed the remaining "Sexual Medicine Ambulance" until 2011, where she continued the work of the institute headed by Volkmar Sigusch until 2006 . Then she continued to work in private practice. On the occasion of her death, the weekly newspaper Jungle World published a detailed obituary by Patsy l'Amour laLove.

Research topics

Her research focused on gender identity , perversions in men and women, and the cultural shift in sexuality . From its founding in 1988, she was co-editor of the journal for sex research, which is in the tradition of the Frankfurt School , and was on the board of the German Society for Sexual Research (DGfS). She and her work were often used, especially in the scientific discussion of pedophilia and sexual identity.

Becker gave her last lecture in September 2018 at the 8th Clinical Conference of the DGfS, which was dedicated to the topic of sexuality between diversity and excessive demands in Göttingen . Under the title Gender and Sexual Orientation in Dissolution - What Remains? Becker spoke about the increasingly flexible boundaries between the sexes and the decreasing distinction between sexual orientations. At the same time, certainties would falter and persist. On the one hand, a “powerful re-biologization of the discourse about gender and sexual orientation” is currently taking place, and at the same time “gender is considered constructed and freely changeable”. What is female or male seems "more unclear than ever". Becker explored the question of what “gender and sexual orientation mean today, and which concepts could be helpful”.

Working through history

She also made psychological contributions to the historical and cultural reappraisal of German history: for example, dealing with Nazi medicine at the University of Heidelberg using the example of the collegial disregard of Alexander Mitscherlich's studies on the Nuremberg medical trial . She went against the concept of a lack of aggression instinct or a natural peaceableness of women, B. in connection with Nazi anti-Semitism, turned against an interpretation of the 68 movement as mere outrage against the guilt of the fathers generation or analyzed the way the West German 68 generation dealt with the (in the sense of Ralph Giordano ) "third guilt" ( of the SED state) in reunification, as their representatives, suppressing their own left-wing utopias, often presented themselves as “chief prosecutors”. On November 9, 1990, Becker published an article in the Frankfurter Rundschau in which she denied the East Germans that they themselves had instigated a Peaceful Revolution in the GDR because they had been too adapted. Her shame about herself then discharged into excessive aggression against the former ruling group of the SED and Stasi. These views have been partially rejected by historians.

Pedophilia in Education

Through the decades of her father Hellmut Becker's († 1993) commitment to the Odenwald School , the z. B. had taken care of the appointment of the headmaster Gerold Becker , she was familiar with this progressive educational home in her immediate vicinity, especially since, according to her own claim, it sought an enlightened sex education . At the height of the abuse scandal surrounding this boarding school around 2010, she called the debate in the newspaper Die Welt lying. Her father's close friend, her godfather Hartmut von Hentig , was also massively attacked and reflected this later in his 2016 memoirs. Jürgen Zimmer , an educationalist at the Free University of Berlin , who worked for Hellmut Becker and was a temporary education editor at the time , explicitly referred him to Sophinette in 2010 Becker's critical contribution to pedophilia (1997). This clearly demonstrated the non-simultaneity of desire in adults and children, and pedophilia was anything but trivialized. Hentig only responded by withdrawing and has not responded to this day.
