Sotirios Kouvelas

Sotirios "Sotiris" Kouvelas ( Greek Σωτήριος "Σωτήρης" Κούβελας , born May 26, 1936 in Amaliada , western Greece ) is a Greek politician of the Nea Dimokratia (ND), who was a member of parliament and was a minister several times.

Life

Sotirios Kouvelas began studying civil engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki , which he graduated in 1960. Later he studied at the Faculty of Law and Economics of the University of Thessaloniki in 1972 with honors. He was elected member of parliament (Βουλ Mitglied των Ελλήνων ) for the first time in the election of October 18, 1981 for the New Democracy (ND) and represented the constituency of Thessaloniki with short interruptions until February 11, 2004 .

During this time, Kouvelas was also mayor of Thessaloniki between 1986 and 1989 and took over the post of Minister for the Environment, Spatial Planning and Public Works in the Tzannis Tzannetakis cabinet on July 2, 1989 until October 12, 1989. In Xenophon Zolota's cabinet , he served as Minister of Culture from November 23, 1989 until his replacement by Georgios Mylonas on February 13, 1990 . On April 11, 1990 he was appointed interior minister in Konstantinos Mitsotaki's cabinet and held this ministerial post until August 8, 1991, after which Nikolaos "Nikos" Kleitos succeeded him. In the course of this cabinet reshuffle, he in turn replaced Michalis Papakonstantinou on August 8, 1991 as Minister of Agriculture and held this post until he was replaced by Sotirios Chatzigakis on October 31, 1991. As part of the renewed government reshuffle on October 31, 1991, he took over from Miltiadis Evert as Minister of the President of the Government, which he held until the end of Prime Minister Konstantinos Mitsotakis' term on October 13, 1993.
