Spellbound is a German thrash metal band from Überlingen on Lake Constance , which was founded in 1999.

history

The band was founded by David Maier (vocals, electric guitar) and Kai Lohwasser (drums), who met in the summer of 1999 due to an advertisement in rock-hard magazine. At first they played with the melodic death metal band Tears of Sadness from Konstanz . However, they did not stay there long because the band did not meet their musical ideas. Together with Lennart Vocke (bass, later also vocals) and Daniel Tschoepe (electric guitar), they founded the band Spellbound to play old Thrash Metal in the Bay Area style and to give it new accents. In 1999 they started the demo First Contact . Eventually Maier gave up the post of singer and Vocke took over his position instead.

The second demo extensions followed in 2000 . After the release there was a separation and they tried other bands, but found each other again in 2002. In July 2003 they finally played at the Bang of Children Festival, together with bands like Doro , Axxis and Madog . In the same year they recorded the demo Violent Forces . In November 2004 the band recorded their first album Incoming Destiny in the Stage One Studio under the direction of Andy Classen ( Holy Moses , Tankard , Dew-Scented ) . Via Sabina Classen (Holy Moses), the band signed a contract with their Armageddon Music label , which Incoming Destiny released on October 17, 2005. Shortly afterwards, drummer Kai Lohwasser left Spellbound for a short time. Stephan Runge was hired as a replacement, but he left the band to concentrate more on his family. Lohwasser joined the band again to play at a few more concerts.

In April 2006 the band played on the W: O: A Roadshow 2006 together with Ensiferum , Orphaned Land and Noise Forest . Other festivals followed such as Baden in Blut , Thrash til Death and the Moshclub Festival , which was to be the last concert with Lohwasser, but also with Vocke. Andy Flache (ex- Varix / Entente ) became the band's new drummer. For the follow-up album Nemesis 2665 David Maier played the bass and took over the vocals again, as was the case when the band was founded. In 2007 the album was released. With Hannes Jäger they also found a new bass player.

Dave Maier has since moved to Nuremberg and found a completely new line-up in Phil Carroll (guitar), Eldo Prosch (drums) and Domi Merz (bass). This time it was produced in collaboration with Jörg Wartmann ( Frei.Wild / Eisbrecher ) and RD Liapakis ( Mystic Prophecy , Suicidal Angels ) in four different studios. The result is called Nothing But the Truth and is due to appear in February 2015. The album cover was designed by Ed Repka .

style

Stylistically, the band is based on the Thrash Metal of the 1980s from the San Francisco Bay Area . Thematically, the songs are mostly about politics, society or violence. The sound of the music is compared to pieces by bands such as Testament , Exodus , Forbidden , Heathen , but also Artillery and Destruction .
