The Rheinpfalz is the largest daily newspaper in the Palatinate ( Rhineland-Palatinate ). The sold circulation is 235,909 copies, a decrease of 6.4 percent since 2007. The paper is based in Ludwigshafen am Rhein and is published by Rheinpfalz Verlag und Druckerei GmbH and Co. KG, which belongs to Medien Union GmbH .

history

The first edition of the Rheinpfalz appeared a few months after the end of the Second World War on September 29, 1945. The founding of the Medien Union followed in 1947. At this point in time, the Rheinpfalz already had a circulation of 200,000 copies. In 1964, Josef Schaub left the management of the company to his then 26-year-old son Dieter Schaub . In 1971 he planned to buy the North Baden rival paper Mannheimer Morgen , but this failed. After the turn of the millennium, however, the Rhine Palatinate was not spared from the media crisis. In the summer of 2003, publisher Thomas Schaub, son of Dieter Schaub, announced a tough restructuring course. According to media reports, a third of the 600 jobs at the time should be lost.

The company's five founding families - Schaub, Lenk, Wipprecht, Resch and Nagel - still hold shares in Medien Union. The family of founding member Josef Schaub, who is now the third generation to manage the publishing house, has a majority share of 50.7 percent.

The Rheinpfalz almost kept its circulation . The number of copies sold has fallen by an average of 0.4% per year over the past 10 years. In contrast, it rose by 0.2% last year. It is currently 235,909 copies. The share of subscriptions in the circulation sold is 81.1 percent.

The editor-in-chief is Michael Garthe , his deputies are Andreas Bahner and Uwe Renners (Digital). Two main and ten regional editions cover the entire Palatinate, the newspaper has 19 local editorial offices. Some of the local editorial offices still bear the names of newspapers previously available on site that were taken over by the Rheinpfalz. The publisher also maintains editorial offices in the state capital Mainz and in Berlin . With the Mannheimer Morgen and the Heidelberger Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung , the Rheinpfalz forms an advertising community.

Together with the Stuttgarter Zeitung , the Ulmer Südwest-Presse , the Pirmasenser Zeitung and the Mannheimer Morgen, the Sunday newspaper Sonntag Aktuell was published until the end of 2006 . Then the newly developed edition Die Rheinpfalz am Sonntag took its place for Rheinpfalz readers . It is not only available by subscription , but can also be purchased separately at kiosks or bakeries in the Palatinate.

Every Thursday, the Rheinpfalz comes with the leisure magazine LEO , which contains the current cinema and TV programs as well as important dates for the region.

Messages that are appropriately marked and prepared in a child-friendly manner are distributed throughout the newspaper, and on Saturdays there is a page for children with the beaver Nils Nager .

Holders of the Rheinpfalz-Card, which is available for a surcharge on the subscription price, receive various advantages when purchasing goods or services in participating companies and can log into the password- protected area of ​​the newspaper website.

In 2006 the Rheinpfalz-Verlag took over the Delta Medien publishing house, which publishes the Meier city ​​magazine that appears in the Rhine-Neckar region .

On October 4, 2008, the Rheinpfalz changed its page layout, which was last changed in 1995.
