The Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star Race (until 2004 The Winston and later Nextel All-Star Challenge and Sprint All-Star Race ) is a race of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series , in which no points are awarded for the current season, the winner however, receives prize money of around one million US dollars. It is held annually at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Charlotte , North Carolina . The Monster Energy Open, a 50-lap qualifying race for the All-Star Race, will also take place as part of the event.
The event
Start authorization
The race winners of the previous and the current season and the last ten event winners are qualified. Former champions of the Cup Series are also eligible to participate. Two further starting places will be awarded to the first and second placed at the Monster Energy Open. Another starting place will be awarded in a fan vote. All drivers who were in the top 50 last year or who tried to qualify for a race in the current year can vote in this. This results in a field of around 20 drivers.
format
The All-Star Races are usually relatively short events with a distance of 70 to 100 laps, which are divided into several segments. A yellow phase is initiated at the end of a segment.
In 2010 the race was divided into four segments. The first segment was 50 laps with a mandatory green flag pit stop on lap 25. Segments two and three were 20 laps each. Optional pit stops were allowed between the first three segments. At the end of the third segment the yellow flag was waved again. During a ten-minute break, the teams then had the last opportunity to make changes to the vehicle before a final ten-lap segment began, in which laps under the yellow flag were not counted.
Racing strategy
The race does not count towards the championship, the high prize money for the victory is the main motivation. Teams therefore often bring their latest, possibly not fully developed, technical developments to the race, as stability is less in demand. There is nothing to lose, only victory counts.
To win it is essential to start the last segment (ten laps under green) in a good starting position. The penultimate segment is therefore very important and some teams try not to stop in the pits before this segment, but rather to achieve a good position in the field. However, this also means driving 50 laps or more with the same set of tires, which can result in a considerable disadvantage in terms of lap times.
