The Church of Rhuis, St. Gervase and Protasius ordained , was - as proved excavations - built in the mid-11th century. Documents about the construction of the church have not survived. In the second half of the 11th century the rectangular choir was destroyed and the current apse was built. The bell tower was also added to the north aisle at this time . Between 1964 and 1970 the church was restored, removing the plastered wooden vault and restoring the open roof structure .

architecture

Exterior construction

The quarry stone portal facade still shows remains of herringbone patterns . The two narrow buttresses between the central nave and the side aisles divide the wall into three sections. A rolling frieze underlines the gable . A small arched window is located in the central axis above the portal . The portal, a small gabled porch, consists of massive pillars that support the arch. The abacus , which consists of a profiled plate with palmettes, is used to decorate the pillars . The arch of the tympanum is bricked. The outer walls of the side aisles were later renewed, but the upper clad windows have retained their original shape. The cornice above shows a spiral motif and rests on corbels . In the south the choir is illuminated by a window.

The apse is supported by five buttresses and the three arched windows are framed by a double row of wedges on two columns . The capitals consist mainly of foliage with volutes at the corners. A cornice surrounds the apse below the roof. In the north, the sacristy adjoins the choir .

The three-story tower, above the last yoke of the north aisle, tapers on the second and third floors. The two upper floors have twin windows on all sides , with two slender columns forming the central support.

inner space

Arched arcades separate the four- bay nave into the main nave and side aisles. The warriors are adorned with a zigzag ribbon and a round bar runs around the base of the pillars. The choir is not exactly on the axis of the nave . The last yoke of the south aisle shows that a tower was originally planned here too, which was not built.

The central nave is connected to the choir by a large, stepped round arch that rests on pillars with archers. The apse has a plastered wooden ceiling and is illuminated by three arched windows.
