The Protestant St. Bartholomew's Church is a 13th century church in the Damgarten district of the town of Ribnitz-Damgarten in Western Pomerania . The St. Bartholomew parish has been part of the Stralsund Propstei in the Pomeranian Evangelical Church District of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany since 2012 . Before that she belonged to the Stralsund parish of the Pomeranian Evangelical Church .

location

Kreisstraße 2 runs through the town as Barther Straße in a north-south direction. From here the Kirchstrasse branches off to the west. The church stands northwest of this intersection on a raised piece of land that is not fenced .

history

The choir of the church was built in 1230; it thus forms the oldest part of the church. A few years later the sacristy was built. The parish suspects in a small church leader that the natural hill could have been a place of worship of the Slavs at an earlier time .

During the Thirty Years War it was damaged but rebuilt. He received a flat beam ceiling. The nave was built at the end of the 15th century, presumably also the chapel extension on the south side. The latter was replaced in 1878 by today's south portal. It served as an entrance to the galleries. In 2020 there will be a boiler room, a toilet and a small kitchen.

The church tower made of brick was built between 1886 and 1887 according to plans by the Stralsund city architect Ernst von Haselberg . The inauguration took place on November 6, 1887. Before that there was a lattice tower that was built in 1723 and dismantled in 1884. In the current tower hang bells from 1447, 1601 (Stralsund, Albrecht Huve) and 1821 (Stralsund, Simon Zach ). The surrounding cemetery was used for burials until the 20th century.

The tower clock has been powered by a radio clock since 1997 . From 1999 to June 2000, the nave was renovated due to the strong sponge infestation and the roof in the area of the nave was re-covered. Also in 1999 the renovation of the south portal and in 2002 the renovation of the church tower and the interior area began. This was completed in 2003. In 2014 the sacristy was renovated. The church was consecrated to Saint Bartholomew in 2001 .

Furnishing

altar

The baroque altar and the pulpit with its sound cover were made in 1721 and 1719 by Rostock master Diederich Hartig . Master painter Sellin from Rostock made the frames. In the wooden altar sheet, a full-figure, white-framed communion group can be seen, along with semi-sculptural figures. On the left side, Jesus can be seen as judge of the world with the globe; on the right is John the Baptist with a Bible and a lamb, symbolizing the innocent death of Jesus. The columnar structure is decorated with cheeks and acanthus. The crucifixion group can be seen above. The pulpit is carried by an angel figure and is decorated with Moses , Paulus of Tarsus and the four evangelists; the sound cover with a strut crown and dove symbolizing the Holy Spirit.

There is also a coat of arms epitaph of Colonel Hans-Ulrich von Schwerin (1624–1681), which was restored in 2006. The patronage bank of the von Zanthier family from Pütnitz , who held the joint patronage of the church until 1945, is located in the chancel. Also worth seeing are two crucifixes that were created around 1500. On the south side there are wall niches that were uncovered in 2002 and show the state from around 1280. A granite tombstone commemorates Magdalena Sibilla von Kossbothen, who died in the 18th century. Outside, an epitaph commemorates Pastor Caspar Christoph Collasius, his wife, son and mother-in-law. He worked in Damgarten from 1775 to 1798.

The interior space that will be available in 2020 is shaped by the far-reaching redesign measures in the 1880s / 1890s, the 1960s and the 2000s. The design of the ceilings, once also that of the walls, comes from the first phase. In the 1960s the galleries were removed except for the organ gallery and the walls were painted gray. As a result of the last renovation, the box stalls from the 18th century came into the Pantlitz village church and mobile stalls were installed. The walls were whitewashed. Furthermore, new lead glass windows were installed in the nave. In 2002, three windows created by the glass artist Thomas Kuzio were installed in the chancel, depicting the Christian virtues of faith, love and hope ( 1 Cor 13:13). In 2003 a Bartholomäus relief (bronze, wood) by the Cologne sculptor Chantal Vogt was introduced.

organ

The organ dates from 1971 ( Sauer company , Opus 1955) and replaced a Buchholz organ from 1848, on which the Damgarten teacher, cantor and composer Hermann Bendix worked for several decades from 1887. The inauguration took place on August 29, 1971. The earliest organ building is from 1729 and comes from Caspar Sperling. When it was being dismantled, experts found a letter from an employee of the Sauer organ building company. The original is exhibited on the organ.

Peal

The church has three bells. The largest bell (from 1447) was brought to the Hamburg bell cemetery to be melted down during the Second World War . She was spared this fate by the end of the war. The middle bell dates from 1601 (cast by Albrecht Huwe, Stralsund), the small one from 1821 (cast by Simon Zach , Stralsund).
