St. Antonius is the Catholic church in the Kleefeld district of Hanover (Kirchröder Straße 12A) and was also the monastery church of the former Franciscan convent . A daycare center of the same name is located in the community center next to the church.

construction

The church was built in 1927/28 according to plans by the Hanoverian architect Ernst Vetterlein . The foundation stone was laid on August 31, 1927, and the church consecrated on June 17, 1928 by the Paderborn Bishop Caspar Klein . The building resembles an unadorned Romanesque basilica . The place of transepts is represented by chapels on the street side both at the portal and at the choir . This is designed as a semicircular apse with six high round-arched light openings. A roof turret with the bell stands over the quasi- crossing .

Furnishing

The original stained glass windows show Franciscan and mystagogical motifs. The altar area was redesigned at the end of the 1960s, the wall color in 1976.

organ

The organ was built in 1992 by the Emil Hammer Orgelbau workshop . The instrument has 28 stops on two manuals and a pedal . The actions are mechanical.

history

The first plans for a Catholic church in Kleefeld emerged parallel to the growth of the district after the First World War . They became more specific when Franciscans from the Thuringian order province agreed in 1926 to set up a branch here and take over pastoral care. The monastery was built at the same time as the church and both were placed under the patronage of the great Franciscan Antonius of Padua .

The Franciscans built on the former Minorite monastery and thus on a tradition that began in 1292 when the first Franciscan monastery in Hanover was built on the site of today's Leineschloss (closed in 1533).

In August 1946, expelled brothers from the Silesian Franciscan Province took over the monastery. The kindergarten was founded in 1949 and had its own building. On April 1, 1956, the St. Antonius parish was established, and on April 1, 1961, it was elevated to a parish. The Kleefelder Ordenshaus was also the Provincialate of the Saxon Order Province ( Saxonia ) since 1998 . In autumn 2010 the branch was given up, on September 1, 2010 the church of St. Antonius was incorporated into the parish of St. Martin .
