The Church of St. Barbara is a Roman Catholic parish church in the Littenweiler district of the city of Freiburg im Breisgau .

history

The original pilgrimage church of St. Barbara stood on the Sonnenberg south of the Eichberg above the village of Littenweiler. It was first mentioned in a document in 1449, destroyed and re-consecrated in 1765 after a reconstruction. Joseph II forbade pilgrimages, so the chapel was no longer used and neglected. In 1862 their stones were carried down into the valley in ox carts and used in the village square to build the church that preceded today's St. Barbara church. The parish, previously a branch of Kappel , was founded in 1915 as a parish curate and had been independent since 1944.

Today's church was rebuilt in 1956/57 according to plans by Anton Ohnmacht , head of the Archbishop's Building Authority Freiburg, and was the third new church to be built in the east of the city of Freiburg since the end of the Second World War . The new building had become necessary because the old church on the village square had become too small. Caused by the rapid growth of the city and the resulting housing shortage, building land in Littenweiler was developed on a larger scale in the 1950s, which led to a sharp increase in the number of inhabitants.

The old church was profaned and has been used as a citizens' hall ever since. It is still recognizable as a former church through the roof turret with onion dome.

The parish of St. Barbara, which had around 3,500 members in 2009, has been part of the Catholic parish Freiburg Ost since January 1, 2015, which also includes the parishes of St. Trinity ( Waldsee ), St. Peter and Paul ( Kappel ) and St. Hilarius ( Ebnet ) belong.

The Mariengrotte Freiburg-Littenweiler belongs to the parish .

Interior

The bright interior is illuminated by seven almost room-high window surfaces designed by the painter Edzard Seeger. They show symbols of the Christian faith in a concrete grid of circles and rectangles.

The most important works of art in the church are the mosaics on the rear wall of the choir and on the front walls of the nave. The central mosaic depicts the coronation of Mary by Christ. A hand and a dove over this depiction symbolize God the Father and the Holy Spirit . On the side of the coronation scene are the holy church patrons, on the right Saint Barbara with tower and host , on the left Saint Nicholas and Saint Konrad von Parzham . On the left front wall the Mother of God is shown with the baby Jesus, on the right there is a crucifixion group. The mosaics were designed by Walther Meyerspeer , Mrs. GP Leonhard and Angelika Khan-Leonhard in the tradition of the master school of Ravenna using numerous gold stones as well as red and blue glass and various marble stones. When the choir was redesigned in 1990, another mosaic, depicting the burning thorn bush ( Ex. 3), was inserted under the altar mosaic , into which the tabernacle is incorporated.

The representations for the stations of the cross were carved out of shell limestone by Hubert Bernhard in 1966. At the rear of the church, a small chapel of the Virgin Mary was set up in a niche, in which there is a Madonna figure from the 15th century.

In the Barbarakapelle on the east side of the church there is the main altar from the old church, designed in baroque forms. The altarpiece with a depiction of the martyrdom of St. Barbara was made around 1870. To the right and left of the altar there are two baroque statues depicting Saint Barbara and Saint Nicholas. In 2004, a mosaic was installed above the passage to the main nave, depicting Saint Joseph of Nazareth as a carpenter. The side chapel is now used as a prayer room for smaller groups.

The organ was installed in 1962 by the company Klais Orgelbau from Bonn as Opus 1249. It has 38 registers on three manuals . In 2014 it was renovated by the Berlin organ builder Ekkehard Fehl. The organ built in the middle of the gallery (unfortunately) largely conceals the large rose window above the entrance portals.

Peace cross

BW

On Leonhard-Grimm-Platz, opposite the church, there has been a six-meter-high peace cross since 1983 , which was created in 1974 by Arthur Bausenhart (1910–2005). It originally stood on the edge of the forest above the village and replaced a first peace cross by Andreas Heizler, which had been erected there in 1948, but was then replaced due to decay.
