history

A church or chapel in Hoengen was first mentioned in a document in 1152. The document describes that the chapel, an estate and farmland in Hoengen are owned by the Premonstratensian Abbey of Floreffe . After several changes of ownership in 1217, according to the document, the Premonstratensian monastery in Heinsberg received certain rights to the church. The monastery also had the right of patronage until the French times at the end of the 18th century. In this document, the church was also listed as a parish church , so that Hoengen was an independent parish as early as 1217 .

In the 15./16. In the 19th century a new three-aisled, three -bay hall church with a retracted three-storey bell tower was built in the Gothic style.

View of the church from 1890

On June 2, 1899, the demolition of the Gothic choir and the sacristy of the old Hoengen parish church began to make room for an extension. Due to the increased population, the church had become too small. The foundation stone was laid on July 22nd, 1899, and in 1900 the extension was completed according to plans by the Aachen district architect Heinrich van Kann . A barely protruding transept with a turret and a choir closed on five sides was now attached to the Gothic nave in neo-Gothic forms . The two secondary choirs were located to the left and right of the choir. The sacristy was now on the north side of the transept.

In the course of the Second World War , the parish church was destroyed on November 1, 1944 by sustained artillery fire, with the exception of a few remains of the wall.

After the currency reform in 1948, collections for the reconstruction of the parish church began. In 1949, the Aachen cathedral master builder and architect Felix Kreusch was commissioned with the planning for today's church building and the rubble of the old church was removed. Kreusch planned a modern, seven-bay, two-aisled step hall church. The bell tower is located on the north side of the rectangular chancel and serves as a sacristy in the basement. On November 27 In 1949, the foundation stone took place and after completion of construction the new parish church was through the Aachener bishop on August 26, 1951 der Velden Johannes Joseph van consecrated to be.

Parish

The Hoengener parish was one of the oldest in today's Alsdorf urban area. Hoengen was already a parish in 1217. However, the parish area used to be much larger than before. So until 1903 Mariadorf belonged to the parish of St. Cornelius, but was then separated and raised to an independent parish, until 1952 Warden also belonged to the parish, but then also became independent. The Begau settlement became the last remaining branch to become independent in 1960.

On January 1, 2010, the parish founded before 1217 was dissolved and merged with the also dissolved parishes of St. Barbara / Broicher Siedlung, St. Mariä Visitation / Mariadorf, St. Jakobus / Warden and St. Michael / Begau. Although the Hoengen parish was the oldest parish and mother parish of three of the four merged parishes, the Mariadorfer church was designated as the parish church of the new large parish and not St. Cornelius.

Furnishing

There is modern equipment in the interior. It is worth mentioning the Way of the Cross in sgraffito painting from 1954. It is the work of Wilhelm Geyer from Ulm . Geyer also designed the stained glass windows that were made and used by the Ludwig Derix company from Rottweil in 1958. The organ was inaugurated on September 6, 1953.

Bells

Before the Second World War, Hoengen had a four-part bell with the chimes f ' , as ' , b ' and c " . All four bells were cast in 1924 by Werner Hüesker, Bell foundry Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock from Gescher and had to be used for war purposes in the early 1940s Today four bronze bells hang in the bell tower of St. Cornelius , which Hans Hüesker, the son of Werner Hüesker, cast in 1953.
