Begau or Begau is a southeastern settlement of the city of Alsdorf in the Aachen city region . It is originally a mining settlement of the Ley settlement type and was named "Auf der Begau" after the corridor at that time. Neighboring towns are Alsdorf- Mariadorf and Alsdorf- Warden .

history

The name "Begau" is probably a combination of Beek and Au. Beek refers to the former stream here, and Au means pasture, because the original heathland was used as pasture for cattle. The street name “Begauer Mühlenweg” in neighboring Kinzweiler reminds us that the area used to belong largely to Kinzweiler.

The Begau settlement was one of the first new development areas planned in 1934 as part of an extensive settlement program for the Wurmrevier and Inderevier in the Aachen coalfield . In addition, six commercial buildings were built, a six-class, two-story school, which 325 children and 6 teachers moved into on April 15, 1936 at Easter, as well as apartments for police officers and teachers, but no church contrary to the wishes of the Catholic population.

In February 1937 an emergency church set up in the wagon shed of a farm was secretly consecrated, but closed for reasons of building control, which led to demonstrations by the Catholic population and the conviction of one of the people involved. Nevertheless, the Begau Catholics did not let up, and on April 24, 1937 the church was officially opened and dedicated to the Holy Archangel Michael. In 1941 the emergency church was expanded into a chapel with a sacristy and a bell tower. On November 16, 1947, the St. Michael Rifle Society was founded. The foundation stone for today's church was laid on August 30, 1953, the consecration on May 22, 1955. The rectorate parish founded in 1936 was elevated to a parish vicarie in 1960 and a parish in 1968 .

It is remarkable that the school changed its name several times: 1936 Begau Community School (the first in the Aachen district ), 1948 Mariadorf-Begau Catholic Primary School, 1949 Pestalozzi Catholic Primary School Hoengen Ehrenstrasse, 1955 St. Michael Hoengen Catholic Primary School, 1966 Warden Catholic Primary School Begau and 1968 Catholic elementary school Alsdorf-Begau Ehrenstraße. It was badly damaged in September 1944 and only restored in January 1951 after classes had to take place in the basement for five years.

On January 1, 1972, Begau and the municipality of Hoengen , to which it belonged, were reclassified to Alsdorf.

traffic

The next motorway junctions are "Alsdorf" on the A 44 and "Eschweiler-West" on the A 4 . In addition, you can use the access point for the A 44 on the L136 for journeys towards Aachen . It is noteworthy that five motorway bridges were built over a distance of 800 meters over the A 44 motorway to better connect Begau to the rest of the city.

The Alsdorf city bus route AL4 of the AVV connects Begau with Warden, Hoengen, Mariadorf and Alsdorf-Mitte. The express bus line 220 connects Begau with Aachen, Hoengen, Mariadorf, Aldenhoven and Jülich. Line 11 can be used to reach the places Blumenrath, Broicher Siedlung, Neusen, Linden, Würselen-Kaninsberg and Haaren, which are not served by line 220.

The nearest train station is Eschweiler Hauptbahnhof on the Cologne – Aachen high-speed line . Another connection to the rail network is the Euregiobahn station Alsdorf-Poststrasse in the direction of Herzogenrath and Aachen .
