Mount Saint Elias |
The Elias chain ( English Saint Elias Mountains or Saint Elias Range ) is the highest, heavily glaciated part of the North American coastal mountains , extends over 400 km from southeast Alaska via Yukon to the extreme northwest of British Columbia and forms the watershed between the Yukon River and the Pacific Ocean . Some of the Wrangell-St.-Elias and Kluane National Parks and Glacier Bay National Park are entirely in the Elias chain.
With an extension of 380 km after the ice caps of the poles, the glaciers of the Elias chain form the largest ice field on earth. The Malaspina Glacier , which flows into the Gulf of Alaska, is the largest glacier in North America. The Mount Logan is the highest mountain in Canada and after the Denali is the second highest in North America.
The mountain is named after the prophet Elias .
