St. Elisabeth Church

St. Elisabeth is the Catholic church in Zweidorf , a town in the Wendeburg community in the Peine district ( Lower Saxony ). It belongs to the parish of the Holy Spirit , based in Braunschweig , in the Braunschweig deanery of the Hildesheim diocese . The church is named after St. Elisabeth of Thuringia and is located in Pastor-Derks-Weg 2.

history

After Catholic expellees had settled in the Wendeburg area as a result of the Second World War , a parish vicarie was set up on June 1, 1946 , comprising the villages of Bortfeld , Fürstenau , Harvesse , Neubrück , Sophiental , Völkenrode , Watenbüttel , Wedtlenstedt , Wendeburg, Wendezelle and Zweidorf . Initially, the services took place in the Protestant church or in a room in the pastor's apartment that had been converted into a chapel . As early as 1951, Saint Elizabeth was designated the patron saint of the parish vicarie. In 1961 the church building site on Mühlenstrasse was acquired and the foundation stone was laid on November 25, 1962. On 17 August 1963, the church was by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen inaugurated , at that time were about 1,100 Catholics to the catchment area of St. Elizabeth's Church. On January 1, 1964, the parish vicarie was elevated to the parish of Wendeburg-Zweidorf, to which the localities Bortfeld, Ersehof , Fürstenau, Harvesse, Neubrück, Rüper , Sophiental, Wendeburg, Wendezelle, Wense and Zweidorf belonged. From February 1974 the pastor also looked after the parish of St. Gereon in Vechelde . In 1976 a youth home was built. In 1997 the path leading to the church was named after a former pastor of the church, Theodor Derks. In August 2006 the Friends of St. Elisabeth Wendeburg eV was founded, it supports the maintenance of the church. On November 1, 2006, the then 1,700-member parish of St. Elisabeth was dissolved and joined the parish of the Holy Spirit .

Architecture and equipment

The church, located around 69 meters above sea level , was built according to the plans of the architect Johannes Reuter sen. built in Kassel , it is entered through the cross-crowned entrance tower. The crucifix created by Wilhelm Polders from Kevelaer was previously used at the closing service of the 79th German Catholic Convention in August 1962 in the Lower Saxony Stadium in Hanover and was given by the bishop of St. Elisabeth Church for the consecration. The organ was built in 1966 by the Krell brothers from Duderstadt .
