St. George's Church in Oberndorf near Kemnath

The listed Roman Catholic branch church Sankt Georg is located in the Oberndorf district of Kemnath .

history

In 1009 the bishops of Bamberg became the landlords of the area around Keminata through a donation from Heinrich II . The church of Oberndorf was founded in this "Bamberg Stiftland" in the 11th century. This is where the Leuchtenberg ministerial family of Oberndorff, later counts of Oberndorf (f), resides. Your castle , which has been removed and is located directly next to the church, is said to have had direct access to the church in Oberndorf. The patronage of St. George also indicates an early knightly foundation. After the cession of the area around Kemnath to the Lords of Waldeck , the right of occupation of the church was transferred to the Waldecker. The first mention of a cemetery comes from the year 1281, perhaps the founding date of a local parish. The tradition of burying the dead of Kemnath in Oberndorf was preserved until the 20th century. In 1286 a Decanus Chunradus was listed in a Waldecker deed; the associated deanery comprised the parishes Thumbach, Eschenbach , Burkhardsreuth , Pressath , Tremmersdorf , Kastl , Mockersdorf , Kulmain , Oberndorf, Schlammersdorf , Erbendorf , Thumsenreuth , Windischeschenbach , Falkenberg, Wiesau, Redwitz , Thiersheim , Selb , Asch, Markneukirchen , Andorf and Brambach. With the town elevation of Kemnath in 1364 a priest is mentioned and for 1387 it is explicitly noted that Kemnath is a parish with a priest and a parsonage.

According to a diocesan description from 1508, the church of Oberndorf was St. Katharina , in the diocesan description of 1665 St. Georg named as the church patron. Even after Kemnath was elevated to a town in the middle of the 14th century and a market church was built there, Oberndorf initially remained the parish.

Interior

In the western wall of the sacristy , a head is walled in, which is said to date from the 13th century. Miraculous power is ascribed to the image of Mary in the church; the text below calls on the faithful to pray for the poor souls in purgatory. The interior of the church is painted with frescoes. On the walls in the presbytery, remains of the apostles can still be seen, in the fields of the ribbed vault the four evangelist symbols - man, eagle, bull and lion - have been preserved in reddish brown colors. Behind the altar is St. Katharina shown; The left picture shows how she is standing in front of the emperor during interrogation, the right one shows how angels carry her corpse on a stretcher to St. Catherine's monastery. The three baroque altars were erected in early 1700. The wooden ceiling of the nave consists of paneled panels, painted with acanthus tendrils.
