St. Jakob on Langfenn

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Jakob auf Langfenn is in a prominent location on one of the highest points of the Salten near the South Tyrolean village of Mölten . The church is dedicated to the Apostle James the Elder (feast day: July 25th).

Building history

It is believed that the little church of St. Jakob auf Langfenn was built similar to St. Katharina in der Scharte and St. Vigil am Joch instead of a pagan high-altitude sanctuary . In addition, all three churches have structural similarities.

St. Jakob auf Langfenn was first mentioned in 1309. However, of the current structure, only the tower can be attributed to the early 14th century. The nave and choir were built in their current form at the beginning of the 16th century. The vault above the altar is marked with a Swabian stonemason's mark and the year 1510. A few years later the church received its renaissance altar . Remnants of frescoes discovered during renovations in 1970 date from the early 17th century. The baroque and later epochs brought practically no changes to the church.

architecture

The small, east-facing church building is made of stone blocks and comprises a simple, rectangular nave with a flat ceiling and a one-bay choir with a five-eighth end . The latter contains a rib vault typical of the late Gothic . The three window openings - two on the east wall in the choir, one on the south wall of the nave - are pointed arched and have a stone frame. The tracery of the two-lane windows is still part of the original inventory. The west facade also contains the late Gothic, pointed arch portal . A small round window is arranged above it.

On the north side of the nave, the simple tower is built on a square floor plan . It is also made up of simple, but especially finely crafted stone blocks. The sound openings on all sides, arranged on two levels, consist of two ogival openings, which are separated by means of a separating column with a cube-shaped capital . The latter still comes from the architectural style of the Romanesque epoch. Parts of the tower may go back to a high medieval predecessor.

Furnishing

The interior of the little church St. Jakob auf Langfenn is very sparsely furnished. Only the winged altar , which was created around 1610 in the Renaissance style, decorates the choir. Two hovering angels are depicted on the predella , presenting the kerchief to Veronica . Above it rises the shrine with figures of the patron saint James the Elder and Saint Sebastian , flanked by two columns with the wings closed. The original wing paintings by Ferdinand Greiter were painted over with passion scenes in 1901 by the Merano painter Rohrgger . On the outside there are depictions of angels holding banners and the two bishops Vigilius of Trient and Ulrich von Augsburg .

The paintings on the north wall of the choir, executed using Secco technology, are likely to have been created at the same time as the winged altar. Since the painting has now been whitewashed, the representations are difficult to see. It should have been a biblical scene, possibly the banquet of the rich man.
