St. Jakobus the Elder is the Catholic Church of Hörgertshausen . The patron saint of the Church is the Apostle James the Elder .

history

A church in Hörgertshausen is mentioned as early as 926, which is consecrated to the Apostle James. The oldest part of the church is the core of the Romanesque choir from the 12th century , which used to be the base of a tower. The nave was built around 1650 and renewed as early as 1711-13. The west tower , built 1711–1713 and costing 2,400 guilders , was crowned by an onion dome. In 1678 Johann Georg von Seiboldsdorf had the left side chapel built in honor of St. Anne. Around 1681 the right side chapel, the so-called Armeseelenkapelle, was added.

Between 1790 and 1791 the church received its frescoes from the Bavarian court painter Christian Wink and the crucifix and the pulpit from Roman Anton Boos . This renovation was funded by the Hörgertshausen-born university professor, elector's personal physician and member of the local Barbara Brotherhood, Philipp Fischer (1744–1800), who took over the cost of the ceiling frescoes on the occasion of the brotherhood's centenary. A large dedication ceremony took place around the patronage of the patron saint from July 24th to 26th in 1791.

In 1810 the shingles were removed from the church roof and replaced with tiles . The second renovation took place in 1853 when the roofs of the side chapels, the sacristy and the portal were lowered. Another renovation took place in 1948.

In 2005, a piece of the ceiling plaster including the fresco fell to the floor in the main nave and the ceiling had to be secured. (As early as 1906, an approx. 1 m² piece of the fresco had crashed elsewhere and had to be supplemented.) From 2007 to 2015, the church was completely renovated by donations and the Archdiocese of Munich-Freising. The surface of the altars was cleaned, loosened layers of paint and primer were fixed, wood fastened, sculptural and wood-technical repairs and the cementing and retouching of imperfections. The substructure of the high altar was restored to its former state using the historical antependium, which was still in the count's booth above the sacristy, with its side parts, using new parts based on older profiles and cornice parts. At the pulpit, the surface and dust cleaning as well as the static securing were carried out first. The benches in the nave were repaired sculptural and wood-technically and missing carvings were renewed. There was also a new altar , an ambo and other items for the church service from the artist family Lutzenberger from Bad Wörishofen.

On March 22, 2015, the altar and the church were festively consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Bernhard Haßlberger and the local pastor Edward Stupak. Relics of the Blessed Bishop Otto von Freising and Blessed Father Kaspar Stangassinger were walled up next to the new people's altar.

In July 2017, the main nave was provided with scaffolding, as the ceiling painting was again severely damaged.

Furnishing

The entire painting, without any stucco, shows the transition from Rococo to Classicism and is quite unique in a country church.

ceiling

The ceiling is painted in three parts with frescoes. In the entrance area below the organ, St. James is shown praying in front of a column on which the Mother of God stands. The martyr's death of the apostle is shown in the center of the church. Christ holds the victory wreath ready for him up in heaven. The rider's horse is a masterpiece of perspective. In the presbytery there is a glorious representation of the patron saint.

Choir arch

The following Latin inscription was placed by Wink in the choir arch: "Sancto Iacobo Maiori Apostolo Ecclesia Haec ex voto Exornata pictaqve fvlget". In free translation this means: This church, consecrated to St. James the Elder, shows itself in new splendor after it was decorated and painted because of a vow. If the larger Latin letters are added together, the result is the year 1790.

Right nave

Crucifix with fresco

The wooden cross was donated by Phillip Fischer and carved by Roman Anton Boos. The surrounding fresco with Maria, Magdalena and Johannes probably comes from Amand Wink.

Left nave

On the left there is a richly decorated pulpit attributed to Roman Anton Boos. It can be reached via an entrance, which is now closed, via the left side chapel.

Stalls

The church stalls in the nave were acquired in 1725. The oak-carved cheeks are elaborately decorated with acanthus leaves. During the last major renovation from 2007 to 2015, the chair cheeks were extensively repaired and the benches and their substructure were renewed.

High altar

The high and side altars were made around 1700. The high altar impresses with the larger than life representation of the patron saint in the choir altar sheet, created by Wink in 1791, and the antependium added in 2015.

Left side chapel

On the Gospel page, which is dedicated to St. Anne , there is a ceiling fresco depicting the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary . The picture of the side altar was painted in 1852 by the Munich painter Ulrich Halbreiter . There is also the burial place of the Counts of Seiboldsdorf zu Schenkenau.

Right side chapel

On the side of the epistle, which is also called the Chapel of the Armies, there is a ceiling fresco that shows the Last Judgment . The baptismal font, which was procured for 60 guilders in 1709 and was given a new insert in 2015, and the historic confessional are also located here. A memorial fresco dedicated to the patron of the church, Philipp Fischer , is also located in the chapel.
