The Catholic branch church St. Jakobus in Rabenden , a district of the municipality Altenmarkt an der Alz in the Upper Bavarian district of Traunstein , was built in the mid-15th century in the late Gothic style. The most important piece of equipment is the high altar from the early 16th century, which is considered the main work of the master von Rabenden . In the cemetery there are over 50 wrought iron grave crosses from the 18th and 19th centuries, some of which come from other cemeteries in the area. The church is one of the protected architectural monuments in Bavaria.

history

According to a later copy of the deed of consecration , the Rabenden church was consecrated in 1458. After the secularization , the church, which had been largely spared from renovation work, was to be demolished. Around 1855 it was decided to redesign the interior in the neo-Gothic style. The left side altar, the stalls and the gallery were newly made. Around 1860 the tower was increased by a new upper floor with a pointed helmet.

architecture

The church is built from Nagelfluh ashlars , the octagonal upper floor of the bell tower attached to the west facade stands out from the rest of the building with its brickwork .

The church is designed as a hall and divided into three bays . The slightly retracted choir is closed on five sides. The structure of the Rabender church corresponds to the late Gothic village churches of the region. The choir and nave are covered by a net vault, the ribs of which rest on flat pillars with profiled consoles .

On the two panels of the predella , Jesus with the instruments of suffering and Mary as the Mother of Sorrows are shown. The two coats of arms - for the provost of the Augustinian monastery of Baumburg , Georg Dietrichinger, and the pastor of Truchtlaching , Gabriel Gessenberger - indicate that the altar was created between 1510 and 1515.

The shrine is framed by carved tracery and is closed at the top with a keel arch . In the middle stands the patron saint of the church, the apostle James the Elder , on the left the apostle Simon and on the right the apostle Thaddaeus . James holds the pilgrim's staff in one hand and the scallop shell in the other, Simon is shown with his attribute , the saw, and Thaddäus with the club.

The side panels depict the Annunciation (top left), the birth of Jesus (top right), the Adoration of the Magi (bottom right) and the death of Mary (bottom left). The four Latin church fathers Jerome , Pope Gregory the Great , Augustine and Ambrosius are depicted on the back of these panels . On the inactive leaves, which only appear when they are closed, you can see St. Sebastian with the arrows with which he was tortured at the top left and St. George fighting the dragon below . On the right side St. Florian can be seen above , who is putting out a fire with a bucket of water, and below James, dressed as a pilgrim and holding a scallop in his hand. On the back of the altar, the side facing away from the church, you can see Christ as judge of the world and the veil of Veronica .

In conversation Enge , under delicate tracery canopies , one is Crucifixion with the attendant figures Mary and John set.

Roman consecration stone

Roman consecration stone

In the first half of the 19th century, a Roman consecration stone was discovered in the altar step of the right side altar . Its origin is not clear. The stone is made of Untersberg marble and has a width of 34 cm and a height of 95 cm. The inscription on the obverse, in which the names of the two Roman consuls Cassius Dio and Severus Alexander , who later became emperor, are mentioned, allows it to be dated to the year 229 AD. After it was removed, the consecration stone was walled into the south wall of the church not far from where it was found.

The inscription reads:

Imp (eratore) domino n (ostro) / Severo Alexa / ndro Aug (usto) III / et Cassio Dion (e) / it (erum) co (n) s (ulibus) / L (ucius) Pomponius / Constans et / M (arcus) Ursinius V [e] / rus IIvir (i) / dicaverun [t] .
