The Church of St. Jakobus the Elder is a Roman Catholic parish church in Weiskirchen , Merzig-Wadern district , Saarland . The church bears the patronage of James the Elder and is listed as an individual monument in the Saarland's list of monuments .

history

The current church was built between 1830 and 1833. The previous Gothic church had previously been demolished around 1830 .

The church was restored from 1945 to 1948 and then expanded in 1952. The expansion, for which the architect Franz Luy (Weiskirchen) was responsible, went hand in hand with the demolition of the classical choir and the construction of a sacrament chapel .

In the years 1979 to 1991, further restoration and reconstruction work followed, whereby the alterations related to the design of the interior.

Furnishing

The church's furnishings include works by the sculptor Willi Hahn ( Trier ). These include the ambo from 1979, the altar from 1981, and the 63 hundredweight sandstone sacrament column in the sacrament chapel from 1982, which depicts biblical scenes from the Old and New Testaments . In the sacrament chapel there is also an octagonal chandelier crown forged from bronze, weighing 9 hundred pounds, from 1990 by the metal sculptor Klaus Apel (Trier- Kernscheid ).

The Stations of the Cross as well as numerous other bronze works, such as, for example, were made by the Cologne sculptor and goldsmith Egino Weinert . B. the mercy seat or the merciful father. Other sacred furnishings include the baptismal font from around 1500 , numerous figures of saints from the 17th and early 18th centuries, a reliquary from the 17th century in the Gothic style, a large altar hanging cross from around 1630, and two Baroque monstrances .

Six windows of the church from the years 1951 to 1961 show representations of the secrets of salvation. In front of the Pieta chapel there is a large grille with rock crystal and a crown and seven swords .

The organ of the church was built in 1951 by the company Gebr. Späth Orgelbau ( Mengen ). The instrument has 26 (27) registers , divided into 2 manuals and pedal . The disposition is as follows:

Bells

In 1955, the Saarlouiser bell foundry in Saarlouis-Fraulautern, which was founded by Karl (III) Otto from the Otto bell foundry in Bremen-Hemelingen and Alois Riewer from Saarland in 1953, cast five bronze bells for the Jakobus Church with the chimes: cis ′ - e ′ - f sharp ′ - g sharp ′ - h ′. The bells have the following diameters: 1475 mm, 1240 mm, 1104 mm, 984 mm, 861 mm and weigh: 1930 kg, 1225 kg, 825 kg, 615 kg, 415 kg.
