St. Johannes Evangelist is the church in the Pfronten districts of Röfleuten and Halden. It is a branch of the parish church of St. Nikolaus in Pfronten-Berg.

history

According to tradition, the chapel is the youngest of the Pfronten churches. The Augsburg bishop and diocese historian Anton Steichele reports that the chapel was built around 1710. For their entertainment, the Röfleuter and Haldener donated 100 guilders and a further 50 guilders by the Dean Bartholomäus Ruf zu Oberdorf . The Pfronten chronicler Liborius Scholz gives a detail: A Bartholomäus Roth von Röfleuten (house name: "Götze") donated the necessary building site for the construction of the little church in 1702.

Building description

A three-sided choir adjoins the rectangular nave to the east . A small sacristy is built on the south side . An octagonal roof turret with an onion dome sits on the ridge above the western entrance . The nave has two bays , the eastern one with two window axes . Another axis in the choir is set off by a recessed round choir arch . The two barrel vaulted yokes in the ship have caps connected in a cruciform shape. All windows are arched windows. A restoration took place in 1937, in 1964 a sign was added to the west. The chapel was given its current appearance during an extensive renovation in 1973.

Furnishing

High altar

The interior of the chapel is extraordinarily harmonious and rich. The altars from the time the church was built are attributed to the workshop of Nikolaus Babel . The high altar is structured by an extension over six columns. In the upper part, in front of the east window, a glory through wreaths of clouds with angel heads allows a view of the open sky. The altarpiece of the church patron St. John the Evangelist is enhanced by the sculptures of St. Bartholomew , the namesake of the two greatest donors, and James the Elder. Ä. , brother of the evangelist, framed. On the outside side there are the figures of St. Florian , protector of fire, and St. George , the patron of the horses.

The two side altars are also richly decorated. The altarpieces, the Holy Family and St. Anthony of Padua , are attributed to the young Johann Heel . At their side on both altars are the patron saints of plague and epidemics, St. Sebastian and Rochus . The origin of the figures in the Rococo style is not certain, they are said to come from the workshop of Peter Heel . Further baroque figures are on consoles, in the choir there is a Queen of Heaven by Georg Bayrhoff around 1700 as well as St. Joachim and St. Anna , the latter must again be attributed to Peter Heel. A Gothic St. Johannes Evangelist around 1480/90 and a crucifixion group with a crucifix by Peter Heel on the south wall of the nave complete the magnificent furnishings. The two assistant figures probably come from Maximilian Hitzelberger .

regional customs

The Pfronten chronicler Liborius Scholz reports that on November 11, 1723 (according to another reading on Christmas Eve) twelve houses in Röfleuten were burned down. The conflagration was due to the careless handling of a lard in Ms. 140 "near fifth" broken out. "Since that time, the two places [Röfleuten and Halden] have held their own public holiday with a service on Christmas Eve to protect against the risk of fire." This so-called fire mass is still held every year.

Another danger threatened the two districts from torrents that ran down from Edelsberg. During floods, house plots were repeatedly badly damaged, so that their taxes had to be reduced. As a defense against water damage, the Röfleuter always hiked at the end of Pentecost to the pilgrimage church Maria Trost on the Wanker Berg near Nesselwang .
