The Church of St. John the Baptist , sometimes also called St. John the Baptist , is the Roman Catholic parish church in the town of Osterode am Harz in Lower Saxony . Their parish of the same name belongs to the Nörten-Osterode deanery of the Hildesheim diocese . The church named after St. John the Baptist is located in the Freiheit district , on the Johannisvorstadt 25 property .

history

In the Middle Ages , Osterode belonged to the Archdiocese of Mainz . In the 1530s the Reformation was introduced in Osterode and with it the churches Protestant-Lutheran, and the Cistercian convent of St. Jacobi was dissolved.

In 1809, Jérôme Bonaparte , King of the Kingdom of Westphalia , to which the Osterode district also belonged, again permitted Catholic services in Osterode. In 1812, the Catholics were given the old Gothic St. John's Church for this purpose. In 1813, after the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig , the Kingdom of Westphalia was dissolved again, and the magistrate of Osterode prohibited the use of the St. John's Church, which had just been renovated by the Catholic community. The Easter or Catholics then used a hall, today's Freedom Court , for their services, but this was soon prohibited by the authorities.

It was not until 1848 that the Catholics were allowed to take over the Johanniskirche again, which they repaired again, and a Catholic clergyman was employed for Osterode. In 1852 the parish of Osterode was founded and Johannes Creszenz Wüstefeld, previously a chaplain in Duderstadt , became its first pastor.

After the number of Catholics in Osterode had grown to more than 600 at the beginning of the 20th century, the construction of today's church in the Johannisvorstadt, below the old castle , near the old Johanniskirche began under Pastor Georg Muth in 1902 . In 1904 the church was completed and consecrated , and on the 1st Sunday of Advent in 1904 the first service was celebrated in the new church. In 1927 the old Johanniskirche was demolished and the cemetery chapel now stands in its place.

In order to delay the advance of the Allies towards the end of the Second World War , a bridge on the Söses was blown up on April 11, 1945 , which resulted in considerable damage to the church.

As the number of Catholics in the Osterode area increased significantly as a result of the Second World War due to the influx of refugees and displaced persons from the eastern regions of the German Reich , the St. Bonifatius Church was built in Badenhausen in 1961/62 . In 1962/63 the St. Martin Church followed in the south of Osterode . On July 1, 1963, the St. Martin Curative Church was separated from the St. Johannes Baptist Congregation, and the St. Boniface Church was also assigned to it.

In 1966 the St. Johannes Baptist Church was renovated and expanded according to plans by the Brunswick architect Wolfgang Tschirschwitz . Claus Kilian modernized the interior . On October 7, 1966 the church was consecrated anew .

Since March 1, 2004, the church has belonged to the Nörten-Osterode dean's office , which was newly founded at the time ; before that, Osterode had its own dean's office of the same name. On August 1, 2004, the St. Martin Church with its previous branch church St. Bonifatius in Badenhausen came to the parish of St. Johannes Baptist . Since September 1, 2008, the St. Barbara Church in Bad Grund has also belonged to the parish of St. Johannes Baptist, but this church was profaned on February 6, 2010 . On September 9, 2015, the St. Martin Church was profaned.

Architecture and equipment

View from the south

The church is around 227 meters above sea level and was built as a neo-Romanesque hall church made of red brick according to the plans of the local building councilor Mende . Your simple chancel is dominated by a hanging cross. Statues to the left and right of the chancel show Mary (mother of Jesus) and the patron saint of the church, John the Baptist. Next to the confessional chapel is a statue of the Sacred Heart . The present organ was built in 1985 by Gebrüder Hillebrand Orgelbau , it replaced the original Krell organ from the early days of the church.
