The Church of St. Johannis in Rahden is the parish church of the Evangelical Lutheran parish in Rahden. It belongs to the Lübbecke parish of the Evangelical Church of Westphalia .

The present church building dates back to the 14th century and became rebuilt in the following centuries several times.

history

The first written mention of the Rahden parish comes from the second half of the 13th century , from the time in office of the Minden Bishop Volkwin V. von Schwalenberg . A church building must have already existed in Rahden at this time, but nothing is known about its building history.

Building history

Layout

In 1353, Bishop Gerhard I von Schauenburg had a rectangular, three-bay hall church built in the Gothic style. The west tower of the previous building from the 13th century was initially preserved. In 1581 the tower was renovated and raised, the passage to the nave was equipped with fittings typical of the Renaissance .

In 1660 the nave was extended to the north. The vault was removed and the three Gothic keystones were walled in on a sacristy that was attached to the east side of the nave . The south and east walls of the Gothic church were retained. In 1789 a renovation took place due to dilapidation, in which only the surrounding walls were preserved.

The windows on the nave are flat arched , the sound holes on the tower are round arched . The portal on the west side of the tower is also arched and bears an inscription from the renovation in 1581. Above the portal there is a niche with a coat of arms and figures.

Interior

The oldest preserved piece in the church is a sixteenth-sided Gothic font from the 14th century . A carved baptismal font dates from the late 17th century . Three bronze Renaissance - chandeliers were also made in the 17th century.

Most of the interior, however, was designed in the early classicist style during the renovation in 1789 . The pulpit altar and the organ prospect , which still shows baroque elements, date from this time .

Bat roost and FFH area
