St. John Louis Hyde du Plat Taylor , also du Plat-Taylor DSO (born January 22, 1865 , † 1936 ) was a British Lieutenant Colonel .

Life

He came from the French noble family du Plat , whose first representative in Germany was Pierre Joseph du Plat (1657–1709), the progenitor of the Hanoverian line. Members of this German line again entered royal Danish and British services. He was the son of British Colonel John Lowther du Plat Taylor Esq. (1829–1904), founder of the Army Post Office Corps . His younger brother was the British engineer Francis Maurice Gustavus du Plat Taylor (1878-1954).

From March 1878 to January 1883, Plat Taylor attended Haileybury and Imperial Service College (Colvin House) near Hertford . At the age of 20 he joined the Royal Artillery on December 9, 1884 . Ten years later he was promoted to captain on March 22, 1894 , and major on April 18, 1900 . In the years 1899/1900 he served with his Territorial Force Infantery Brigade in South Africa in the Second Boer War . In April 1900 he was involved in fighting in the Orange Free State and in the 217-day siege of Mafikeng , in May / June in the Transvaal , in July east of Pretoria and west of the city also in the battle at Zilikat's Nek in the Magalies Mountains . For his services he was awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal with three clasps and on October 28, 1901, was made a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order by King Edward VII .

Plat Taylor was stationed in Glasgow ( Scotland ) in 1906 and left the Royal Artillery there on May 16, 1906. However, he was reactivated for the duration of the First World War and was also involved in combat operations here. He later lived with his family on the Scottish border in Berwick-upon-Tweed , but since 1926 spent at least the winter months in his house in Nicosia , Cyprus .

He married on July 6, 1904 Alice Home Purves (1878-1965), the daughter of Lieutenant Charles Hyde Home Purves (1850-1887) and Frances Mabel Archer (1855-1917) from Dumas ( Berwickshire ) and sister of Sir John Home -Purves-Hume-Campbell , 8th Baron (1879-1960). The only child was the British archaeologist Joan du Plat Taylor (1906-1983), a pioneer of underwater archeology .
