The Church of St. Josef (originally St. Joseph ) is a Roman Catholic parish church on Behaimstrasse in the Weißensee district of Berlin . It was built in 1898/1899 in the style of the north German brick Gothic and is a listed building .

history

The history of the Weißensee Catholic community began in 1886 with a service under the direction of the provost of St. Hedwig Johann Assmann . Max Westermaier , a private lecturer at the Botanical Institute of the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin, had personally committed himself to this. In the following year a corrugated iron chapel was built on Börnestrasse. On May 18, 1890 a bell could be consecrated, and the young Kuratiengemeinde received the patronage of St. Joseph . On May 4, 1895, the elevation to the parish took place .

The Moritz & Welz architectural association provided the plans for a permanent new building, the cornerstone of which was laid in Behaimstrasse in 1898. The church was consecrated on June 4, 1899.

The church suffered considerable damage during World War II . An incendiary bomb destroyed the roof, tower and organ gallery. Reconstruction began in 1946 and from 1948 services could again be held in the church. The tower was also rebuilt by 1952 and a new organ was inaugurated in the same year.

In 1974 a working day chapel was created, and from 1982 the chancel was fundamentally redesigned. In 1991 the Catholic Theresa School Berlin-Weißensee moved into the neighboring school building. In 1999, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of St. Josef, a festival week was held in the community. In 2009 the Marien Altar was redesigned.

architecture

overview

St. Joseph is a clinker verblendbau in late Gothic forms. The base of the east-facing church tower with a rectangular ground plan (9 m * 15 m) is a triple ogival wimpergbekrönte entrance and in the tower a rise bell chamber . This has window-like raised sound openings. The church with a cruciform floor plan has gables in all four directions and a clock face of the tower clock can be seen on each side . A ver kupferter roof turret crowned the flat also covered with copper plates gable roof .

The nave is around 36 m long and 22 m wide, it extends into the courtyard and is a three-aisled gallery basilica with cross vaults . The polygonal end of the choir has a star vault . Today it is separated from the nave by a half-height wall .

At the same time as the church building and designed by the same architects, a parish and parish hall was added to the side. This is a plastered brick structure with clinker brick structures and arched windows on the two lower floors.

Interior

The furnishings are simple and consist of a few wood carvings in late Gothic forms. The crucifix is a work from the end of the 14th century. It comes from Langeln and was restored in 1980. Figures of saints from the 1950s and stained glass windows from 2001 complete the interior of the church. Even though the interior of the St. Joseph Church was redesigned several times due to the destruction during the war and the liturgical reform following the Second Vatican Council , its basic structure was retained.

organ

The organ was built in 1952 by the organ building company Schuster ( Zittau ). The instrument has 43 stops on three manuals and pedal and has pneumatic pocket drawers.
