The St. Katharina Church is a Catholic parish church dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria in Oberkirchen , a district of the municipality of Freisen in the St. Wendel district , Saarland .

history

The oldest part of the church is the tower, built in 1414 . It is listed as an individual monument in the Saarland's list of monuments. A new nave in the form of a hall church was added to the tower around 1760 .

Due to a lack of space, the church was enlarged to the east in 1956/1957 by an extension based on plans by C. Engelhardt.

As part of the expansion, extensive renovations took place inside the church, which resulted in the church losing its consecration , as a new high altar was also erected. Therefore, the church was consecrated anew in August 1963.

Church building

The church building is divided into three parts, which were built at different times: The late Gothic tower, the Baroque nave and the modern extension of the nave with a new sanctuary . In the church tower, which was built from rubble stones , there is a flat pointed arch portal in which the year 1414 can be found. Two circumferential cornices structure the tower, which is crowned by a pointed helmet.

The church is equipped with a late Gothic baptismal font from 1473 and figures from the 19th century. Like the tower, the baptismal font and the figurative decorations are listed as individual monuments in the list of monuments.

The extension is determined by a large mural on the back of the chancel.

The organ of the church was built in 1954 by the French organ builder Haerpfer & Erman ( Boulay ). The cone shop instrument is set up on a gallery and has 29 registers , divided into 2 manuals and pedal . Game and stop action are electro-pneumatic. The disposition is as follows:
