The Evangelical Lutheran affiliate church of St. Katharina stands on a small hill on the western outskirts of Cottendorf , a district of the town of Stadtilm in the Ilm district of Thuringia . The parish Cottendorf belongs to the parish area Griesheim in Kirchenkreis Arnstadt-Ilmenau the Evangelical Church in Central Germany .

The simple church was built in the Romanesque style at the beginning of the 12th century . The nave was built in exposed masonry made from rubble stones . In the 17th and 18th centuries, other styles were incorporated into the renovation and expansion work. There are Romanesque arched windows on the south side, but rectangular baroque lattice windows on the north side . The portal in the western part of the south side shows a pointed arch in the interior in the Gothic style. In the east of the nave, which is covered with a gable roof , is the roof tower , to which a choir closed on five sides is attached . The tower has a sloped, curly hood on which a lantern sits. Inside is a bell over 500 years old . On the western narrow side there is a bricked up pointed arch portal from the 15th century and a bricked up Romanesque round arched window. The interior of the nave has two-storey galleries and is spanned with a wooden barrel vault supported by grooved coves . The pulpit stands on Doric columns , in front of it there is a free-standing wooden altar from 1811. On the upper west gallery is the organ front , which was built around 1800, for this purpose an organ with 7 registers , divided into a manual and a pedal , was built in the 19th century . made by an unknown organ builder .
