Behind a one-story residential building , a hall church was built by Carl Niermann , which was designated on June 4, 1868 and spun off from St. Hedwig. In honor of the testator it was named Matthias Church, after the construction of the new St. Matthias Church on Winterfeldtplatz it was called Matthias Chapel. The independent curate existed until the end of 1983 and was reunited with St. Matthias on January 1, 1984.

The Catholic Schoenstatt Community continues to hold Mass twice a month in the Schoenstatt Chapel.

Building description

Of the structure of the chapel built in 1868, the ogival frieze and the extension of the choir can still be seen. In 1881 the nave was lengthened and a side aisle was added. Felix Hinssen designed today's interior, including the facade , in 1959. The room is spanned by a flat, wooden barrel vault. The flat ceiling of the square choir has skylights . The vestibule and the nave are from the nave by pointed arch arcades separated. There is now a blinded, windowless facade on the forecourt facing the street. A blind arcade rises above the wide portal in the middle part, ending in open round arches of a bell gable . The side wall surfaces are sand-colored plastered and framed with brown ceramic tiles .

Bells

The ringing of four bronze bells , which was cast by Rudolf Perner in 1959, originally hung in the bell gable. After a bell tower was built in 1964 , it hangs in the bell house .
