St. Margarethe village church

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Margarethe in Altengesees , a district of the Remptendorf municipality in the Saale-Orla district in the middle of the Thuringian Slate Mountains, is a listed building . The church belongs to the parish area Gahma - Weisbach in church circle Schleiz .

Altengesees, ancestral seat of the von Watzdorf family , was first mentioned in a document in 1571. A chapel dedicated to the apostles Simon Peter and Jude Thaddäus is said to have stood here as early as 1300 .

In 1782 a rectangular three- axis hall church was rebuilt or built by converting the old chapel, which was dedicated to St. Margaret . It is covered with a slated hipped roof, which carries a ridge turret, which is crowned by an eight-sided attachment with a hood and a lantern . The interior with a flat ceiling and two-storey galleries was painted ornamentally in 1832 .

The organ with nine registers , divided into manual and pedal , was created by Christian August Gerhard in 1788 .
