Roman Catholic parish church of St. Mary

The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Maria in the Württemberg town of Isny im Allgäu , district of Ravensburg , is the church of the Catholic parish of Isny (Kemptener Straße 5), which was newly founded at the end of the 19th century. Until 1803 there were only Protestant citizens in the imperial city of Isny itself. The construction of the church and the establishment of a separate municipal parish made it clear that by the end of the 19th century many Catholics had moved to this border town with Bavaria.

history

In the late Middle Ages, there were frequent disputes between the monastery of St. George and the imperial-free city. This is why the idea of the Reformation quickly spread in Isny. As early as 1529, Isny took part in the protest action of the evangelical estates in Speyer and thus became a center of the Reformation in the Allgäu. In 1531 Isny joined the Schmalkaldic League and in 1555 the Nikolaikirche was finally handed over to the city and thus to Protestant worship.

However, the monastery itself remained Catholic until 1803. As a result, over the centuries there were repeated clashes between Protestants and Catholics. It was not until the Peace of Westphalia in 1648 that a clear separation was made: Protestants “intra muros” and Catholics “extra muros”. The Catholic monastery belonged z. B. two mills in the city as well as the rural settlement on the "Viehweid", which is characterized by craftsmen (especially weavers), which became an independent municipality of "Isny-Vorstadt" at the beginning of the 19th century and which only merged with the city of Isny in 1911.

Since 1803, Catholics could again live in the area of the former Protestant imperial city. For them, the former monastery church of St. George has now become a parish church again. In the following years there were increasing tensions between the long-established Catholics of the former monastery parish and the "city Catholics". Therefore, in 1888, the second parish of St. Maria was established in the area of the former imperial city. Only the old parish areas from the time of the monastery belonged to the parish of St. Georg again. Thus, the building of St. Maria that was built a few years later became an important testimony for this new Catholic community. A square was found east of the old town outside the city wall, so that it could be placed in a solitary location on Kemptener Straße,

In 1902/03 St. Maria was built according to plans by the Stuttgart architect Joseph Cades in a partly neo-Romanesque, partly neo-Gothic style by the Isny master craftsman Burger. The separation of the parishes was finally completed with the consecration of the Church of St. Mary in 1903. An interior renovation took place in 1959, and in 1962 the facade was renovated. In 1985 the interior was repaired again and in 2004 the facade was renovated.

In 1981, the two parishes of St. Georg with Neutrauchburg and St. Maria merged to form the total parish of Isny and have been led by a pastor again since 1982.

Exterior

The Catholic parish church is a solidly bricked and plastered building, a three-aisled hall church with ribbed vaults , polygonal choir and choir side tower. The nave is provided with a gable roof, the tower ends with a pyramid roof . The facades are accentuated by brick-facing opening walls. The mix of styles between neo-Gothic and neo-Romanesque is typical of this historicism era of the late imperial era in Germany.

Interior

The interior is typically neo-Gothic, but does not look as ambitious as it is the case in the old Gothic church. The central nave has more of a hall character. Because there are round arches between the pillars , the building looks like a late Romanesque basilica . However, there are no through aisles . They are designed like a kind of chapel for each yoke , but with pointed arches between them.

Furnishing

The furnishing of the choir with glass windows takes up the intentions of the Gothic, but in the style of the beginning of the 20th century. The pictures of the strong or holy women in the choir are also painted in the typical manner of the time.

Church stalls

The medium-brown, simple stalls match the colored ribs of the vault and the decorative painting between the ribs.

organ

The Maier organ in the Marienkirche

Six years after its inauguration, the Marienkirche received its first organ. It came from the workshop of the Späth brothers in Ennetach ( Opus 172). The organ consecration took place on July 7th, 1909, followed by a church concert.

Almost a hundred years later the Späth organ had to be replaced. Since no grants were granted, it took the Catholic parish several decades to have the funds to finance the new organ, which cost 350,000 euros. Series of events such as the Isny Organ Autumn and music and meditation in the run-up to Christmas regularly brought in donations. The journalist and music lover Gerhard Konzelmann , who lives in Isny, also supported the project with charity lectures.

The new organ comes as Opus 51 from the organ building company Josef Maier in Hergensweiler . Some well-preserved stops of the Späth organ, such as the oboe stop , were used in the new building . The instrument with 33 registers on three manuals and pedal was inaugurated on March 6, 2005. The organ prospectus was adapted in its structure to the windows of the west gable. The middle glass window now comes into its own, as the two wings of the prospectus are placed to the left and right of the middle window and the back positive allows light to enter the church space unhindered. The instrument has the following disposition :

Bells

Originally there were five bells in the Marienkirche , four of which had to be given in as so-called "war victims" in the First World War in order to be melted down for the armaments industry. Only the largest bell was allowed as Läuteglocke remain in the church. Pastor Fink held a farewell mass for the bells and gave a "bell sermon", which he also published. The bells were taken on 29 July 1917 by the bell foundry Wolfart, decorated with black armbands and under the chiming transferred the only remaining bell to the station.

Cultural monument

For scientific reasons, there is a public interest in maintaining the building. It is protected as a cultural monument according to § 2 of the Monument Protection Act of Baden-Württemberg .
