The church of St. Martinus is an Evangelical Lutheran church in West Greussia and belongs to the parish of Großenehrich .

history

A previous building - dendrochronologically dated to the year 1175 - was a Romanesque hall church , of which the substructure of the east tower is still preserved. It was a branch church of the Church of St. Gumberti in Clingen . It had two altars, one of which was dedicated to the Three Kings ( trium regum ) and the other to the Virgin Mary ( Beatae Mariae Virgnis ). From 1509 a separate pastor was employed. From 1706 to 1710 repairs were made to the tower. The superstructure of the tower (half-timbered storey and curved hood) dates from this time. The nave was rebuilt in 1725 according to a design by the master builder Ludwig from Sondershausen (inscription above the entrance door). The basement of the tower was also converted into a sacristy and the Romanesque apse was demolished. In 1770 the interior and its galleries were painted . Repairs to the tower were carried out from 1822 to 1824 and in 1857 red and white fire bricks were laid as the floor. In 1892 a stair tower was built in the corner of the nave and the north wall of the tower, in it a spiral staircase led upwards.

The church received a new organ in 1927. In 1929/1930 the sponge-eaten paneling of the sacristy was renewed. Extensive renovation work took place from 1988 to 1996 after the church threatened to be demolished due to its dilapidation.

Exterior construction

The simple hall building with a gable roof has a three-sided closure on the west side. To the east is the tower on which a curly slate dome sits. In the northeast is the round stair tower, the roof of which is a little below the roof of the nave. It has a slate-covered conical roof . The roof line of the broken apse is clearly visible on the outer wall of the tower. The walls are unplastered, but seem to have been plastered originally. The windows are round-arched and have been partially renewed due to sanding of the red sandstone walls. The entrances are on the ground floor on both sides on the long sides in the second western axis. The galleries are entered from outside. The entrances to it are above the entrances to the church. They can be reached through a covered double flight of stairs.

Interior panorama

The vault forms a simple wooden barrel . The furnishings come from the middle of the 18th century and are kept in blue, gray and red tones. The resurrection of Christ is painted on the vault, framed by angels holding banners. The galleries rest on six wooden, octagonal pillars. The former structure of the seating according to stands is clearly recognizable: Members of the landowning families took their places in the galleries. The gallery parapet is divided into fields. In these are the family coats of arms of the landowners and their initials (on the south side from east to west FAH von Selmnitz , SH von Heringen, JC Seidler, GB; on the north side AW von Hagen , LC von Dachröden and FF von Dachröden). In addition, there are images of the prophets on the first gallery and images of the apostles on the second gallery. A separate area on the ground floor in the northeast of the church was probably a sick leave . The sacristy behind the altar is entered through two side doors in the altar wall. It also serves as a winter church .

Furnishing

The pulpit altar
  • The pulpit altar is a work by the sculptor Christian Johann Biedermann from the years 1728/1730. It consists of a blasted gable, Corinthian and Ionic columns and sweeping cornices . The pulpit stands on a polygonal base. A sound cover in the form of a crown is located above it . On it stands a figure of Christ in a halo with a hand raised in blessing, and putti stand around it . The bust of a clergyman is attached to the parapet of the pulpit. The pulpit is framed by two head-high figures: on the left the pulpit Peter , identified by a book and key, on the right the evangelist John with a chalice. On the back there is an inscription which, under Christoph Ludwig Keßler in 1770, mentions Johann Christian Werneck and JC Brosamer from Mühlhausen as the painters.
  • The octagonal baptismal frame dates from the second half of the 19th century and is of neo-Gothic style. As an inscription on the upper rim of the bowl is the Bible verse Whoever believes and baptized will be saved. Ev. Marci 16 v. 16 .
  • There is a twelve-armed brass chandelier from around 1895.
  • Two chilled cast iron bells from Schilling and Lattermann date from 1958.
  • The striking bell supposedly originally belonged to the church of the no longer existing village of Kroborn. It bears the inscription Gloria in Excelsis Deo and dates from 1494 (inscription)
  • A mechanical clockwork was made by JF Weule in 1907. It was repaired in 1992 after having been out of service for a long time.

Churchyard

  • The churchyard was used as a cemetery until 1869. It has a northern and a southern entrance and is bordered by a quarry stone wall.
  • A Luther beech stands in the northeast of the churchyard. It was planted in 1917 to mark the 400th anniversary of the Reformation.
  • A birch was planted for a steel helmet celebration in the spring of 1933 . Of the gravestones, only a weathered baroque gravestone on the south side of the church has survived. In addition, monuments commemorate the fallen of both world wars.

organ

The organ from 1738 was created by Johann Michael Hartung (from Gebesee or Schloßvippach ). The brochure was made by the sculptor Klemm from Clingen . The pipework that is currently in the organ was created by Friedrich Wilhelm Böttcher from Weimar in 1927. The organ cannot be played. A harmonium is used to accompany the church service.
